基山町での竹炭作り見学です。

森の侵食というと、私達は汚染や虫害を想像しがちですが、日本の森は「植物」によって侵食されているそうです。一見風情がある竹林ですが、一時的に開拓されたまま森林が放置されると、圧倒的な繁殖力を持つ竹によって他の原生種が侵されていくそうです。
この話を教えて下さったのは、殖え続ける竹を伐採し活用する道を探る団体さん。彼らは、化学的な除湿剤、消臭剤に代わる、古来からの技術で作った「竹炭」の商品化を試みているそうです。

We tend to think of pollution or insect damage when we talk about erosion. Japanese forests are said to be eroded by "plants". The bamboo grove seems beautiful, but it is strong to extinguish the virgin forest, as human abandoned to mentain after population decreasing. I was taught this story from a staff of an organization to commercialize "bamboo charcoal" using ancient technology, instead of chemical deodorants and dehumidifiers.
There is a saying, "hiding a tree in the forest". I felt the difficulty to understand essential problems just by looking at a green forest.
