AI and labor
I was participating in a translation project. My job was to translate summaries of cutting-edge technology papers from German to Japanese. Of course, there were also technologies such as AI, language processing, and machine translation.
Because of the advanced technology, I had a hard time understanding the content. For several years, I worked from home seven days a week, from morning until late at night. It was during the coronavirus period, so it was helpful.
In the end, the client of the translation project, a certain public institution, decided to fully adopt machine translation, and the translation project was disbanded. Since it is a technology-based translation, it is only necessary to have a firm grasp of the logic, so with the level of advancement in machine translation, they probably decided that it was sufficient.
Even though I made a small contribution to the edge of machine translation technology, my job was taken away by machine translation. It's ironic and makes me laugh (^O^)
Nowadays, the job of translators has changed, and they are now reduced to "checkers" who check machine translations. It may be different for literary translators.

There are concerns that jobs will be taken away due to the development of AI. Well, translators are probably the best example of this.
Is this a bad thing?

Translators were not suddenly deprived of their jobs, but with the advent of the Translation Assist DB system, they were greatly helped. This has now evolved into a machine translation "checker," which naturally requires a high level of proficiency in the translation language. In other words, I think it can be understood that the method of "translation" has simply changed.
I think that's fine.
As technology advances, it is natural that human labor will also change. What can we do other than respond flexibly to changes and advances in technology?

In fact, as I am involved in the evolution of AI and the paradigm shift in technology as a translator, and as I learn more about AI and cutting-edge technology, I feel hopeless and apprehensive. I'll discuss that as another issue.

Reality cannot/will not be stopped, so we have no choice but to respond flexibly to it!
