言葉にならないほどすごい曲だが、頑張ります。

DOZING GREEN (Acoustic Ver.):

(Live Take at SHINKIBA STUDIO COAST on April 16, 2019):

I can't easily put into words how great this song is, but I'll try.

「The World of Mercy」is long, yet leaves us yearning for more. We should applaud the band for their effort in making such a monster of a song. It definitely took a lot of intense labor and insight to make something so complicated.  Personally, I have always been a fan of DIR EN GREY's longer works (i.e.「アクロの丘」,「Mazohyst of Decadence」,「MACABRE —揚羽ノ羽　三ノ夢ハ　二蛹　一—」,「ain't afraid to die」,「Vinushka」,「The Blossoming Beelzebub」,「Diabolos」,「Macabre (The Unraveling ver.)」, etc. ), and「The World of Mercy」is no exception. With its dark atmospheric tone and dynamic song writing, stemming from the cryptically progressive side of their tenth album, "The Insulated World", this track, in all its 10:22 of glory, feels ironically quick. It's so enchanting that the listener just gets completely absorbed and loses track of time.

「The World of Mercy」opens to bells and a bass pulse eerily similar to a heart beat. Kyo starts off with a very intimate gothic verse sung simultaneously over a whispered version of the same lyrics in a similar style to「Rider On The Storm」by The Doors.

Soon, a high toned and melodic verse ensues, concluding with the rest of the band joining in, thumping along with a gloomy melody heavy on low drums, bass, and distorted guitars.

The next two sections go through the typical DIR EN GREY style progressive build up complete with a slight scream, a mere threat to what could come, and a chorus. Then those disturbing electric sounds, which were also highly present throughout "The Insulated World", appear again. And this is where the promotional video ends.

The song continues onward at a steady pace. Kyo's repeated line, "The game", here is really creepy, as if in desperation, or at the point of losing his mind. Then, at 4:25, it feels like something is coming. Like a knock on your door at night, the guitars are abruptly slammed, enough to make you jump. These licks are intense, dirty, and completely distorted.

The more I become intimate

The clown danced like crazy and made it bloom
The flower was indeed very very beautiful

But it's in this next part where the band really shines. With Toshiya and Shinya providing a stable base, Kaoru and Die go at it together together in unity playing a duel solo in this transition.

This all leads to Kyo's eruption of harsh hardcore vocals and high pitched screeches. These climatic sections are always stand out points for DIR EN GREY tracks, but the opera-like singing layered in there between 5:45-5:53 with the line "The World of Mercy" also really stand out.

The song almost seems to end as it comes to a standstill at 7:06. Complete with eerie noises and a piano, Kyo's voice, resonates from the emptiness in a tone of hope? Or perhaps self determination? Vengeance?

The hand entangled in compassion
I break free and stomp on it as I taint

Regardless, the song continues to build up with another threatening chorus.

This is followed by the most aggressive breakdown of the song, complete with true death vocals. 8:41-8:58 is definitely my favorite section of the whole track. As opposed to the exhilarating and fast paced midrange growls and shouts common in "The Insulated World", these growls were more complete death vocals, deep and brutal. I love DIR EN GREY for everything they make, but I'm still death metal at heart. It wouldn't be honest to say that I wasn't just slightly disappointed that this song wasn't more on the aggressive side. With that said, I still completely love it!

Kyo's display of his vocal range in this part is complemented by the opera-like falsetto paired with growls and super high screams. As the song comes to a climax, the music dies away to a reverberating silence, leaving the conclusion and what the World of Mercy truly is to our imaginations.

According to the member interviews that came with the single,「The World of Mercy」was kind of left over from "The Insulated World" or more in line with an epilogue. While we saw various progressive tracks on the album, it had an altogether hardcore feel that is largely absent from this single. Being so long, it is understandable why they decided to make it a stand alone single. While just an inference, it does seem likely that this track will not be included on a new album.

In terms of artistic direction, Kyo said that he was highly involved. Besides the lyrics, he said that he created images based on this world he wanted to express. This extends to the music, of course, but also the promotional video and even the single's cover. Overall, Kyo is excited about this song. Kaoru's first line in his interview, a response to the question of how the writing process was, was "大変でした / It was tough". Reading up on the process of creating this song, and the fact that it was born from two songs, this is quite understandable. Regardless of the process though, all the members seem satisfied and ready to perform it live.

And fans like us couldn't be more excited!

DOZING GREEN (Acoustic Ver.):

This was an interesting idea. Because of its various releases and different versions, 「Dozing Green」 is one of those songs that always pops up when I put DIR EN GREY on shuffle. I am more than happy to have an additional one to listen to.

While acoustic, Kaoru and Die's paired rhythms are powerful and take precedent, just as they did in the original. Toshiya's bass stands out a bit more in this acoustic rendition while Shinya's drums also appear a bit more pronounced. Overall it, it seems like a more light hearted version of the original, but that is not a bad thing. 

Die mentions that the band went through various songs in order to figure out which would work best for an acoustic track. They realized that many actually could not be transformed into acoustic numbers due to their arrangements. Luckily,「Dozing Green」works.

It could be fun to have an all acoustic DIR EN GREY concert or EP! I mean, we already got a full remix album. It's definitely possible! 

GRIEF [LIVE]
(Live Take at SHINKIBA STUDIO COAST on April 16, 2019):

Live tracks can be tricky, mostly for the way they are recorded. Overall, they did a good job with this one. The audience is really active, clapping along during the bridge and singing with Kyo throughout the verses. It's amusing to hear them shout "fuck off, fuck off!". For the longest time, I thought it was "fuck you, fuck you", but the official lyrics say otherwise. 

「GRIEF」, being one of their more aggressive, groovy, metal-core songs, brings me back to the days of "The Marrow of the Bone". In contrast to the progressive monster that came first on this single, it is nice to hear a demonstration of how well the band can jam together live as well as get their fans pumped. Over the years, it has been fun to see「GRIEF」come back again and again as an energetic live favorite. Great choice for the last B track of「The World of Mercy」!
