What is Na CMC?How it is Used?

NA CMCis the most widely used and the most used cellulose in the world. Its abbreviation is CMC-Na. It is a cellulose derivative with a degree of polymerization of glucose ranging from 100 to 2000. Its relative molecular weight is 242.16. It is white fibrous or granular powder. It is odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic and insoluble in organic solvents.

Nature:
NA CMC is the sodium salt of cellulose carboxymethyl ether, which belongs to anionic cellulose ether. It is white or milky white fibrous powder or particle with a density of 0.5-0.7g/cm3. It is almost odorless, tasteless and it is of hygroscopicity. It is easy to disperse in water to form transparent colloidal solution and it is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. PH of 1% aqueous solution is 6.5-8.5. When the pH value is more than 10 or less than 5, the viscosity of the slurry is significantly reduced, and the performance is the best when the pH value is 7. It is stable against heat. The viscosity increases rapidly below 20 ℃, changes slowly at 45 ℃, and the colloid denaturates and the viscosity and properties decrease obviously when heated for a long time above 80 ℃. It is soluble in water and the solution is transparent. It is stable in alkaline solution. It is easy to hydrolyze by reaction with acid and precipitate when the pH value is 2-3. When it reacts with multivalent metal salts, precipitation will also be produced.

Uses:
NA CMCis used as thickener in the food industry, drug carrier in the pharmaceutical industry, and adhesive and anticoagulant in the daily chemical industry. In printing and dyeing industry, it is used as protective colloid of sizing agent and printing paste. In petrochemical industry, it can be used as a component of oil production fracturing fluid.
