場所が決まったとなれば次はリノベーションのプランです。まずは壁をすべて取り払っちゃおう。床も天井も躯体以外はすべて解体しよう。もともとの田の字型の間取りは生かしながら、空間としてはつながっているけれど用途としては区切られている。打ち合わせのためのショールームスペース、来客者もくつろげるリラックススペース、堀木の書斎的なパーソナルスペースと、それからキッチン。パーソナルスペースには3段くらいに組んだ棚をパーテンション代わりにして囲むように配置する。

Once the location is decided, the next step is to plan the renovation. First, let's remove all the walls. Let's demolish everything except the floor and ceiling frames. While keeping the original "shape of the Chinese character 田" floor plan, the space is connected as a space, but separated in terms of use. There is a showroom space for meetings, a relaxing space for visitors, Horiki's study-like personal space, and the kitchen. The personal space is surrounded by three shelves that serve as partitions.

そんなイメージで図面を作成すると、堀木は友人の渡辺さんに相談しました。渡辺さんは2016年に〈shape the gear（シェイプ・ザ・ギア）〉として独立されていますが、以前は〈raregem（レアジェム）〉に在籍し、過去には堀木の自宅をリノベーションしていただいたこともあります。その出会いはものづくりがシナジェティックに人を繋いでいくということの証明そのもの。少し長くなりますがお付き合いいただけたらと思います。

Once he had such an image in mind, Horiki consulted his friend, Mr. Watanabe. Mr. Watanabe has been independent as "shape the gear" since 2016, but previously worked for "raregem" and has renovated Horiki's home in the past. This encounter is proof that craftsmanship can connect people in a synergetic way. This will be a bit long, but we hope you will bear with us.

2009年か2010年だったか、堀木は〈CLASKA〉で見たある展示会のディスプレイ、特に壁面の造作が印象的だったことを当時の竹内紙器のブログに記しました。それからしばらくして、そのブログを見たという方から連絡をいただきました。レアジェムを主宰する西條賢さんからで、堀木の見た壁面を造作したのがレアジェムだったのです。

In 2009 or 2010, Horiki wrote on Takeuchi Shiki's blog about an exhibition he saw at "CLASKA" and was particularly impressed by the wall murals. Some time later, he was contacted by someone who had seen the blog. It was Mr. Ken Nishijo, who runs "raregem", and it was "raregem" that created the wall Horiki saw.

レアジェムは西條賢さんが主宰するデザインレーベル。家具の製作、住居や店舗の設計施工、こだわりの帆布やレザーで作ったバッグなど、幅広い活動を行なっています。コンセプトは「レス・イズ・モア」。その頃、レアジェムはある内装の案件で行き詰っていました。たまたま竹内紙器のことを知り、ホームページを見てみると自分のことが書かれていた。それで堀木に興味を持ち連絡をいただいたようでした。

"raregem" is a design label run by Ken Nishijo. The label's wide-ranging activities include furniture production, design and construction of houses and stores, and bags made of canvas and leather with a special attention to detail. The concept is "less is more". At the time, "raregem" was stuck on an interior design project. He happened to learn about Takeuchishiki, and when he looked at their website, he saw that he was mentioned. That seemed to have piqued Horiki's interest, and he contacted us.

西條さんの話を伺うと、どうやら竹内紙器のストレージのようなものを作ろうとしているようでした。当時はまだストレージはありませんでしたが、ちょうど別件で進めていたものがあり、その応用で対応できそうだったのでサンプルを作って提案すると思ったとおり、ドンピシャでした。西條さん曰く、イメージを伝えただけでカタチにしたのは堀木が初めてだったのだそうです。

When we talked to Mr. Nishijo, it seemed that he was trying to make something similar to Takeuchishiki's "storage" products. At the time, we did not yet have "storage", but we had another project in the works, and we thought we could use it as an application, so we made a sample and proposed it to him. According to Mr. Nishijo, Horiki was the first person to give shape to an image that he had just expressed.

それでますます興味を持っていただいたのか、一緒に店をやらないか？ というお誘いをいただきました。そのときは諸事情ありいったん話は流れたのですが、堀木はその頃からサロン的な場所に興味を持っていました。東京に通う頻度も高まり、事務所を構えてもいいくらいに仕事が増えてきていた時期でもありました。敷金や礼金は出せないけれど月々の家賃と高熱費の折半ならできると西條さんには話していましたが、この条件では断られるだろうとも思っていました。

So did that make Mr. Nishijo more and more interested in Horiki? He offered Horiki, "Let's open a shop together".For various reasons, the conversation fell through at that time, but Horiki had been interested in a salon-like setting since that time. We was commuting to Tokyo more frequently, and our workload was increasing to the point where we was ready to set up an office. Horiki told Mr. Saijo that we could not pay a deposit or key money, but that we could split the monthly rent and utilities with him, but we was sure he would refuse under these conditions.

しかし再び、西條さんからいい物件を見つけたと連絡をいただきます。その物件は池尻にあり、現在は早稲田の〈petit cul（プティ・キュ）〉を拠点に活動する澄敬一さんのインテリアショップ〈push me pull you〉があった場所でした。堀木があらためて条件を伝えるとそれで構わないとのこと。そうして2010年の12月にオープンしたのが〈Shed That Roared（通称シェッド）〉でした。店名は「騒々しい小屋」という意味。シェッドについて、当時の竹内紙器のホームページでは「雑然としながらも居心地のよいちいさな作業場から、うるさいマニュファクチャラーの愛をお届けします」という言葉で紹介しています。

However, Mr. NIshijo contacted us again to let us know that he had found a good property. The property was in Ikejiri, where Keiichi Sumi, who now works out of "Petit cul" in Waseda, had his interior store "push me pull you". When Horiki reiterated his conditions, they were fine with that. "Shed That Roared" opened in December 2010. Takeuchishiki's website at the time introduced "Shed That Roared" by saying, "We bring you the love of a noisy manufacturer from a messy but cozy little workshop".

シェッドは西條さん、奥様、スタッフのエイスケさん、そこに堀木が加わって木・金・土の週3日だけオープンしました。西條さんが内装を手がけ、レアジェムのバッグやレザーのアイテムと一緒に竹内紙器のオリジナル製品である”ステイプルド”も並べたその場所は、半分は作業場でしたがやはりショップ。堀木が望んでいたのはあくまでも、東京のど真ん中で、活版印刷とかものづくりをしている場所に人が集まって情報を交換しあう、サロンのような場所でした。

"Shed That Roared" was opened three days a week on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays by Mr. Nishijo, his wife, staff member Mr. Eisuke, and Horiki.The space, decorated by Mr. Nishijo and featuring Takeuchishiki's original "Stapled" products alongside "raregem" bags and leather items, was half a workshop, but it was still a store. Horiki wanted a place that was more like a salon. A place where people could gather and exchange information in the middle of Tokyo, in a place where letterpress printing and craftsmanship are practiced.

店であれ何であれ、場所ができると人が出入りするようになります。そうして集まってきた人のなかにワタナベさんがいて、シオダさんやトシさんがいて、やがてレアジェムの社員になっていきました。トシさんはもともとは料理人でした。堀木の奥さんの叔母さんが横浜の農家だったのでよく野菜をあげたりしました。独立するときに作ってくれた革のベルトは今もよく使っています。

When a place, be it a store or anything else, is built, people come and go. Among those who gathered in this way were Mr. Watanabe, Mr. Shioda, and Mr. Toshi, who eventually became "raregem" employees. Mr. Toshi was originally a cook. Horiki's wife's aunt is a farmer in Yokohama, so Horiki often gave her vegetables for him. Horiki still often use the leather belt Mr. Toshi made for Horiki when he started his own business.

オープンから数年が経ち、ワタナベさんが現場に入り、シオダさん（現在はクラフトプロジェクト〈FROME〉として活動）がウェブを手がけるようになった頃、堀木はシェッドに立つのをやめ、その後共同経営という立場からも身を引きました。やがてワタナベさんも独立するのですが、独立して最初の仕事が堀木の自宅のリノベーションだったというわけです。そして話はやっとタケノマルに戻り、ワタナベさんにリノベーションを手伝ってもらえないだろうかと相談することになります。

A few years after the opening, when Mr. Watanabe was on site and Ms. Shioda (now working as Craft Project "FROME") was working on the web, Horiki stopped working at the "Shed That Roared" and later stepped down as a co-owner. Mr. Watanabe eventually went out on his own, and his first independent job was the renovation of Horiki's home. The story finally came back to Takenomaru, and Horiki asked Mr. Watanabe if he would be interested in helping me with the renovation.
