ずいぶん前(2016年3月号)だが以下のような記事が雑誌に載った。

Colchester Rubber Co. World's 1st Basketball Sneaker 1892

このブランドはどうもバスケットボールシューズの元祖は自分達だということを主張したかったらしい。

BRAND PROFILE
1888年、元Hayward Rubber WorksのGeorge Watkinsonと息子のIrvingよりアメリカ、ニューイングランド地方にあるコネチカット州コルチェスターで誕生。Colchester Rubber Companyの工場は元々Hayward Rubber Co.という名で1847年にできHayward Rubber Co.はその後1885年に休業。1888年にColchester Rubber Companyとして再出発し、1892年にUnited States Rubber Companyに買収され1893年に休業。工場は1909年に全てなくなった。AlphaモデルはGeorgeの息子Irvingが考案したデザインであり彼はトレンドのインフルエンサーであり、スポーツマン、そしてバスケットボールの競技が始まったときに関わった人物でもある。またスニーカーは元々プロトタイプで1891年にバスケットボールを発明したDr.James Naismithがコルチェスターの街から80キロ離れたスプリングフィールドという街で作られたと考えられている。Colchesterはテニスシューズ、サイクリングシューズ、ベースボールシューズ、そして寒気候と湿潤気候用のブーツや靴などハイエンドなラバーシューズを生産していた。Irving氏のオリジナルバスケットボールスニーカーが”世界初”で現在のアメリカのクラシックなスニーカースタイルのテンプレートであり、世の中の数兆足のスニーカーはColchesterのDNAを継いでいるのである。

The shoes, which Colchester dubbed the National Treasure, have an emblem from the 1890s, the factory location and rubber soles with specks of various particles. As rubber purification technology didn’t come about until the early 1900s, the sneakers are likely among the first of their kind.
Basketball likely inspired the creation of the shoes, as they were made around the same time the sport was invented, and nearby. The replica sneakers incorporate the color and style elements of the first design, which was produced in 1892 — one year after Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in Springfield, Mass. The company headquarters in Colchester, Conn., were just 50 miles away.
Gary Pifer acquired the Colchester brand in 2005. The heritage story was revived at the time through reproductions of the first basketball sneaker, which U.S. Rubber originated under Colchester, he said, adding that the company manufactured sneakers for multiple private labels before shuttering. “They were the Prada of rubber footwear,” he said in a previous interview. “The most expensive and highest prices to customers of the gilded age.”

ということらしい。

これが彼らの主張するバスケットボールシューズの元祖モデルと主張する「Alpha Model 1892」という靴のオリジナルだそうである。

バルカナイズド製法やものづくりの観点から時代考証的に違う理由（テープの二重巻きやアンクルパッチやソールパターン）を説明していくのも簡単だが以下の広告が一発でその主張を覆してくれる。

これをなぜ彼らがオリジナルだとか共同開発しただとかと言い張るのかの根拠が知りたい

U.S.Kedsの30s~40sの商材とほぼ同型でありソールのパーターンやホクシングテープの巻き方インソールのアーチサポートなどを比較すると、この靴「Alpha Model 1892」自体は1930年代以降のモデルであることは確定である。

1930年代にはコルチェスターの工場は存在しておらず、また同じような形状でアメリカンラバー(U.S.ラバーではない)のバージョンも存在しているため、彼らがオリジナルと主張するものはブランチ違いのモデルか工場が違うディフュージョンモデルの可能性は高い。

同時代(1930s~40s)に存在したコルチェスターの別モデルも貼っておく
同時期にKEDSとコルチェスターのダブルネームモデルも存在しておりこの時代のモデルであるのはほぼ確定である。

追記

現存するもののパッチの形状が違うため（横線が入っている）工場が違う可能性もあるが1890年代であることはまずない。

しかしながらではコルチェスターが素晴らしくないかといえば、それはまた別の話である。コルチェスターのHPに載っている通り創業から買収までの期間はわずか数年だが、その祖であるヘイワードラバーカンパニーこそ加硫ゴム業界の祖であり、創業者のナサニエル＝ヘイワード氏こそが硫黄を混ぜることでゴムが安定することを発明した本人だからである。

The coming season is likely to be one so very much mixed as to prices, that the retail dealer will hardly know “where he is at." Two mild open winters in succession have caused an accumulation of goods which must be worked off regardless of cost before factories can be reopened for 1901.

We Are Not in That Position
Our goods sold out clean in 1899, as well as in 1900, and we therefore shall not be obliged to cut our prices for the sake of working off old stock. Our factory is running, our prices will be maintained uniformly and invariably, and the retail dealer in handling our goods will not be subject to depreciation nor to underselling. U.S.ラバーの社史にコルチェスターの名前、ワトキンソン親子の名前は一つも出て来ないのはなぜだろうか？

コルチェスターラバーが買収された後にワトキンソン親子はフィラデルフィアに別の工場を建てているので関係あるわけがない。

ストーリーを創作するのは自由だが嘘はダメである。
