HKG, butter and croissants

Nowadays, we can go abroad easier than before thanks to LCC.

My college and I decided to have one day trip to Hong Kong.

Technically it was 1.25 day trip.

We departed to Hong Kong in the morning and left there at midnight and came back to Japan in the very early morning.

However, the hotel price in Hong Kong is normally high.

So our trip can save the cost to stay at the hotel and we can enjoy Hong Kong almost for over 12 hours.

**Why we buy butter in Hong Kong **

My college told me that Hong Kong is the good place to buy butter.

Especially French churned butter.

Hong Kong is a duty free place and also doesn’t have consumption tax.

Which means Hong Kong can import good butter cheaper and people can buy these without tax.

I got interested in buying butter in Hong Kong.

And we went to City Superin IFC Mall near Central station.

We could find so many kinds of butter in City Super.

Actually I didn’t know which I should buy.

ÉCHIRÉ butter is one of the most famous French Butter in Japan.

And the price was less than half of price in Japan.

I could know which was the normal butter and which was churned butter thanks to the labels.

Then I bought ÉCHIRÉ salted butter for toasts and unsalted Le Gall for bread making.

**The important points before buying butter in Hong Kong **

There are 2 important points to know before you buy butter in Hong Kong.

1. Best season to buy butter

Butter melts at 28 - 35℃.

In summer time, the temperature will be higher than 28℃ in Hong Kong, even in Japan.

Which means...you have a risk that your butter might melt during your trip.

Even if you go to Hong Kong in spring and autumn, you still have the same risk of the temperature is high.

So I super recommend that you bring ice packs and a cooler bag to keep it cool.

My college could get some ice for butter from the cashier in City Super.

You might be able to ask them too.

If you have a flight to Japan in the afternoon, the temperature in the airplane container would be super high.

Afternoon flights in winter, mid fall and early spring will be ok.

But in the other season, it might be difficult to bring back the butter to Japan in the afternoon flights.

2. You cannot bring butter more than 3.4 oz in the cabin.

Unfortunately butter seems the restriction item as same as liquid items.

If you want to bring butter in the cabin, the amount should be 3.4 oz or less.

If you want it more than 3.4 oz, you need to keep it in the checked-in baggage.

I recommend that you use the ziplock bag to keep the butter to protect your stuff clean even if you put the butter in the check-in baggage.

**Homemade croissants with churned butter **

After I flies back from Hong Kong, I wanted to bake something with the churned butter.

I wanted to concentrate on the butter flavor.

Then I decided to bake croissants.

I baked croissants so many times.

They tastes good but not excellent.

But I can tell you,

The croissants I baked with the churned butter were absolutely excellent.

I could bake them with 100% churned butter.

If you are interested in baking croissants and have an opportunity to go to Hong Kong, I deeply recommend to buy churned butter and bake them with it.
