２０１７年１０月１４日，国際ケーブル放送『アルジャジーラ』のWebコネクト版『AJ+』が日本の過労死問題を2分の動画にまとめてTwitterに投稿しました。今年発覚した電通女性社員・高橋まつりさん，NHK女性記者・佐戸未和さんの過労死事件をとりあげ，最新のネット上の議論をコンパクトにまとめた動画のテロップ部分のみを英日対訳で書き起こしました。

Some people say the fine is nothing compared to the loss of a life and that it won't do much to change Japan's work culture or labor laws.

It's happened so many times that there's even a word for it:

過労死 (Karoshi)

政府の新たな調査によると，「2010年1月から2015年までに過労死（karoshi）に関連する自殺が368件あったという。しかし実際の数は更に多いと見られている。

A new govt report said there were 360 karoshi-related suicides between January 2010 and march 2015. But the actual number is believed to be higher.

日本の国営放送であるNHKは，2013年に，たったひと月の間に159時間の過剰労働を強いられた記者の一人が過労死（karoshi）していたことを最近になって認めた。

NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, just admitted that one of its reporters died of karoshi back in 2013 after working 159 hours of overtime in a single month.

In this country, you're [not good enough] until you've died of overwork. Even if you clock in 200 hours of over time, as long as you don't die, it's a 'given'. Describing karoshi as "dying because of overwork" is to not understand the core of the problem. It's best to say "dying from being forced to overwork."
