２０１７年１月９日，トランプ新大統領が誕生する一週間半ほど前に，第７４回ゴールデングローブ賞の授賞式で，大女優のメリル・ストリープ（Meryl Streep）が生涯功労賞に当たる「セシル・B・デミル賞」の受賞スピーチでスタンディング・オベーションを受けるほどの名演説を行いました。以下は独自に聴き取り，和訳したものです。

背景

2017年1月9日，ハリウッドから全世界に感動がもたらされた。第74回ゴールデングローブ賞の授賞式で，大女優のメリル・ストリープが生涯功労賞に当たる「セシル・B・デミル賞」の受賞スピーチでスタンディング・オベーションを受けるほどの名演説を行ったのだ。日本ではメディア界はすぐに反応し，とくにエンタメ界が「緊急」として長文のスピーチを全訳したのだが，どれも急ぎ過ぎたのか，スピーチの真のエッセンスを捉えきれてないと感じた。把握しているだけでも，BBC，ELLE，COURRIER JAPON，BuzzFeedと，さまざまなメディアが全訳を試みたが，どれもしっくりこない。試しに，もっとも反響のあったスピーチの部分の抜粋を集めてみた結果，COURRIERが，もっともエッセンスを掴んでいるように思えたので，これをベース（あくまで参考）に改訳を行った。ソースはニューヨークタイムズだが，こちらもラフな聴き取りを起こしたもののようなので若干修正した上で全文英日併記する。

Please sit down. Thank you. I love you all. You’ll have to forgive me. I’ve lost my voice in screaming and lamentation this weekend. And I have lost my mind sometime earlier this year, so I have to read.

皆さんに許しを請わなければなりません。先週末叫んだり喚いたりしていたので，声を失ってしまったのです。それから今年のはじめに正気も失ってしまったので，読むことしかできません。お許しください。

Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press. Just to pick up on what Hugh Laurie said: You and all of us in this room really belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. 

「ハリウッド外国人映画記者協会」　(Hollywood Foreign Press) の皆さん，ありがとう。ヒュー・ローリー (Hugh Laurie) が先ほど言っていたことに続きますが，ここにいる皆さんを含め私たち全員はいま，米国社会のなかで最大の中傷の的となっています。

だって，ハリウッド，外国人，報道陣ですからね。

But who are we, and what is Hollywood anyway? 
It’s just a bunch of people from other places.

でも，私たちはいったい何者なんでしょうか。そもそもハリウッドとは何なんでしょうか。ただの、いろいろなところから来た人たちの集まり──です。

I was born and raised and educated in the public schools of New Jersey. Viola was born in a sharecropper’s cabin in South Carolina, came up in Central Falls, Rhode Island; Sarah Paulson was born in Florida, raised by a single mom in Brooklyn.

私は生まれも育ちもニュージャージーで，公立学校で教育を受けましたし，ヴィオラ・デイヴィス (Viola Davis) はサウスカロライナの小作人の小屋で生まれ、ロード・アイランドのセントラルフォールズから世に出ましたし，サラ・ポールソン (Sarah Paulson) はフロリダで生まれ、ブルックリンでシングルマザーに育てられましたし，

Sarah Jessica Parker was one of seven or eight kids in Ohio. Amy Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy. And Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem.

And the beautiful Ruth Negga was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, raised in London - no, in Ireland I do believe, and she’s here nominated for playing a girl in small-town Virginia.

あの美しいルース・ネッガ (Ruth Negga) はエチオピアのアディス・アババで生まれ，ロンドンで育ち──あれ，アイルランドだったかな──今回，ヴァージニアの片田舎の女の子役で受賞候補になっています。

Ryan Gosling, like all of the nicest people, is Canadian, and Dev Patel was born in Kenya, raised in London, and is here playing an Indian raised in Tasmania.

ライアン・ゴズリング (Ryan Gosling) はいい人たちばかりのカナダの人ですし，デヴ・パテル (Dev Patel) はケニアで生まれ，ロンドンで育ち，今回はタスマニア育ちのインド人を演じています。

So Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.

ハリウッドにはよそ者や外国人がうじゃうじゃいます。その人たちを追い出したら，あとは，アメフトと総合格闘技（マーシャルアート）くらいしか観るものはなくなります。しかも，それは芸術（アート）ではありません。

So… an actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that. Breathtaking, compassionate work.

役者の唯一の役目は，自分たちと異なる人びとの人生に入っていくこと。それはどんな感じなのかを見ている人に感じさせることです。まさにその役目を見事に果たした力強い演技が，この1年もいっぱい，いっぱいありました。息をのむような，心のこもった仕事ばかりでした。

But there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth.

しかし，この１年の中で唖然とさせられた演技が１つありました。そして，それは私の心の奥深くに突き刺さりました。それが「よい」演技だったからではありません。「よい」ところなど何ひとつありませんでした。なのに，その演技は効果的で，その役目をしっかり果たしました。想定された観衆を笑わせたのです。歯をむき出しにさせて。

It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.

それは，わが国で最も尊敬される地位に就こうと承認を求める人物が、障害をもつリポーターの真似をした瞬間のことでした。特権，権力，抵抗する力においてはるかに劣勢に立つ相手に対してです。

It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.

心が砕かれる思いがしました。その光景がまだ頭から離れません。
映画ではなく，現実の話だったからです。

And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing.

公的な立場にある権力者によって，このような他者を侮辱する衝動が行動に移されてしまうと，人びとの日常にも浸透し，同じことをしてもよいのだという考え方が蔓延してしまいます。

Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose. 

侮辱はさらなる侮辱を呼び，暴力はさらなる暴力に人を駆りたてます。権力者にその地位を利用して弱者をいたぶることを許してしまえば，それは私たち全員の敗北を意味します。

O.K., this brings me to the press.

ここで，話が報道につながります。

We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage. That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in the Constitution.

私たちには信念のある報道が必要です。権力の責任を追及し，どんな暴虐に対しても追及を怠らない報道が。われらが建国者たちはそのために，報道の自由を憲法に制定したのですから。

So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, because we’re gonna need them going forward, and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.

だから，皆さんにお願いがあります。裕福で有名な「ハリウッド外国人映画記者協会」の皆さんと，役者のコミュニティの皆さんとで，私と共に，「ジャーナリスト保護委員会」 (Committee to Protect Journalists) の支援を行いませんか。私たちにとっても，これから彼らが必要となるし、真実を守るために，彼らにも私たちが必要だからです。

Once, when I was standing around on the set one day, whining about something - you know we were gonna work through supper or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, “Isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor?”

ある日，私がセットの周りで，何かについてグチをこぼしていた時──ほら，夕飯が食べれないとか長時間の撮影になる時とかあるでしょう？その時に，トミー・リー・ジョーンズ (Tommy Lee Jones) が私にこう言ったんです。

Yeah, it is, and we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.

そう，その通りです。私たちにはその「特権」と，共感をもたらすという役目があることを互いに再認識しなければなりません。私たちはみな、ハリウッドが今夜ここで栄誉を授かる仕事に誇りをもつべきです。
