昨日の占拠運動について

To all Japanese people who are concerned about Hong Kong
About yesterday's occupation activity

皆さんはすでにメディアを通じて、昨日香港で起きたことを知っているかもしれません。昨日、デモ参加者は立法会に突入し、私たちが現在の制度・政権に対して持っている不満と怒りを、世界に向けて示しました。ひょっとしたら皆さんは、デモ隊による暴力・破壊行為に特に関心を持っているかもしれません。しかし、この事件について結論を下す前に、これらのことを皆さんに知って頂きたいと思います。

" You all may be aware of what happened in Hong Kong yesterday from media reports. Yesterday, the demonstrators stormed into the Hong Kong Legislative Council building in an attempt to let the whole world know the level of discontent as well as our anger against the current system and the government. Perhaps you may be more concerned about the acts of violence and destruction by the demonstrators. But before you make any judgment, I wanted all of you to know the stories behind the demonstrations."

1. この一ヶ月は、香港人にとって長い一ヶ月でした。香港人は署名運動を行い、世界各地でのアピールを行い、新聞広告を掲載し、100万人のデモを行い、200万人のデモを行い、私たちの民主と正義に対する強い意志を示し、全ての手を尽くしました。志を同じくする人3名は、自死によって政権による民意の無視に抗議することさえしたのです。

"1. The past month has been the longest month for all Honkongers. The Honkongers collected petitions, held worldwide appeals, posted ads on newspapers, took to the streets with 1 million people, then increasing to 2 million people, doing all they can to show their strong will towards democracy and justice. Three individuals who share our cause have even chosen to claim their own lives in protest against how the current government has ignored the will of the people."

2. 昨日のデモに参加した人たちは、皆香港を強く愛し、制度の改革を実現したいと願う香港人です。立法会への突入によって訴えるという手段に出たのは、過去一ヶ月、いや、過去十年、二十年にわたって、香港政府と中国共産党政権が香港市民の願いと、私たちの民主に対する訴えを全く尊重しなかったためです。

"2. The people who participated in the demonstrations yesterday are all Hongkongers who love Hong Kong and wants to realize system reform. The reason why we had to storm into the Legislature was because for the past month - no, for the past decade or even two decades, the Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist Party regime have not respected at all the desire of the Hong Kong citizens and their demand for democracy.

”3. The Hong Kong government have repeatedly described yesterday's demonstration as a form of 'violence.' However, the Hong Kong government is in no position to rebuke violence. The whole world witnessed on June 12 how the evil police have exercised unjustifiable acts of violence, not only against unarmed citizens but also against journalists. The police responded to the demonstration through use of excessive force against the demonstrators, while Hong Kong Government Chief Executive Carrie Lam praised the police's action as "exercising restraint and being professional."

"On June 30, pro-government demonstrators used brute force against people of different political beliefs and journalists and even deprived them of their personal properties. But the Hong Kong government said nothing against it."

4. 実際の所、もっとも根本的で、しかし姿の見えない暴力は、とっくに香港に現れていたのです。この二十年余りの間、行政長官が民主的制度で選ばれないだけでなく、立法会も香港人のものではありませんでした。職能別選挙があるために、立法会で市民が直接選べるのは半分の議席に過ぎず、また、職能別選挙の議員が否決権を持つ制度のため、民主や市民生活に有利な議案の多くが廃案になってしまいます。近年は、政府は直接的に気にくわない候補者や議員の資格剥奪を行えるようにすらなりました。香港人の声は、ずっと押し潰されてきたのであり、尊重されたことなどないのです。

”The truth is that the most fundamental and yet shapeless form of violence was taking hold of the Hong Kong populace long before this. For more than two decades, not only was the selection of Chief Executive of the Hong Kong government conducted through undemocratic means but the Honkongers had no ownership over the Legislative Council itself.“

"5. The demonstrators who stormed into the Legislative Council yesterday were labeled 'rioters'. But they didn't try to destroy the Council entirely as they please. Instead, they posted notes on historical artifacts and literature and libraries saying 'DO NOT DAMAGE THIS'.

”In the cafeteria, we left notes saying, 'WE ARE NOT THIEVES SO WE DO NOT STEAL'. And when we drank any of the drinks there we left money to pay for them."

"If we are true 'rioters' then would we care enough to preserve the literature? Would we appeal to our senses to keep everything in tact in spite of the harsh conditions we are placed in? The purpose of the demonstrators is not to hurt people. Nor is it our purpose to destroy anything as we please. It is to show the oppressive nature and the injustices of the system."

6. あるいは、あなたは、意見を表明する方法は色々あるので、立法会に突入する必要はないと言うかもしれません。過去二十年、香港人は全ての方法を尽くしました。一度、また一度と、あきらめずに訴えてきました。しかし、政府はこれを聞いたり、尊重したりしたことがありません。たとえ三人の若者が自殺しても、政府はこれに反応を示しません。一言の反応もないのです。多くの若者にとって、これは香港の最後の重大な局面です。彼らは自分の命を賭けてまで、真の民主と正義を得たいと考えています。あなたはこのようなデモのやり方に賛同しなくても結構です。しかし、若者をここまで追い詰め、彼らを死によって訴える行為にまで駆り立てているのは、この恥知らずの殺人政権なのです。

"6. Or you may say that there are various ways of expressing opinion and that there is no need to storm into the Legislative Council. In the last two decades, HongKongers have taken every step there is. We made our call, one by one, and never gave up. But the government never listened or respected us. Even if three young people claim their own lives, the government will not respond. They will not utter a single word about it. For many young people in Hong Kong, we are at a critical juncture. They are staking their lives in order to achieve justice and democracy. You may not agree with our ways of taking on to the streets like we do. And that's fine with us. But you need to know that it is our shameful, murderous government that is pushing young people over the edge to make a statement by killing themselves."

"7. Truth be told; there are no 'rioters (bohto)' but just 'tyranny (bohsei)'. With enormous power and enormous financial backing, the HK government would use their machines to hurt their own people, and mercilessly oppress our will. Yes, it is true that demonstrators committed to violence and destroyed some architectures. But the destruction the government has inflicted on us are irrecoverable. They are destroying our system, values, and even the lives of young people.

8. 村上春樹さんの言葉は、香港人にとって意義深いものです。「高くて硬い壁と、壁にぶつかって割れてしまう卵があるときには、私は常に卵の側に立つ」。権力者に対して寛容を示さないで下さい。そして、圧迫されている力なき者に対して、過酷な責めを負わせないで下さい。私たちは人として生まれた以上、基本的な尊厳を与えられるべきです。香港人は、この尊厳のために戦っているのです。

"8. Novelist Murakami Haruki's words are very meaningful for Honkongers:

'If there is a hard, high wall and an egg that breaks against it, [no matter how right the wall or how wrong the egg,] I will stand on the side of the egg.'

Please. Do not tolerate the powerful. And please. Do not place harsh blames on those who are weak and oppressed.

So long as we, Honkongers, are each born as a human individual, we should deserve to be treated with dignity. That's what we are fighting for."

9. 私たち香港人は、昨日の出来事を経て、香港人であることをさらに誇りに思っています。今後も、私たちは勇気と、誠実さと、愛を持って、香港のために戦います。

"9. We, the Hongkongers, are even more proud of ourselves following yesterday's event. With courage, honesty, and love, we will continue to fight on for Hong Kong."
