その婦人はいつも雨傘をさしていた。
毎日毎日、雨が降っていてもいなくても。

晴れた日は日傘のつもりなのだろうか。

ある晴れた日のこと　
ぼくの弟が婦人に教えてあげたのだ。

「おばさん、雨は降っていませんよ」

びっくりした表情の婦人。
雨傘を傾け、空を仰ぐのだった。

「あら、本当だわ」
そして、婦人は雨傘を閉じた。

「坊や、どうもありがとう」
そのまま婦人は歩み去った。

ぼくと弟は顔を見合わせたものだ。

その日からだった。
婦人が雨傘をささなくなったのは。

毎日毎日、晴れた日はもちろん、雨の日も　
どんな土砂降りでも雨傘をささないのだ。

これもまた、近所の人たちの噂になった。

ある雨の日、ぼくと弟は一緒に道を歩いていた。
ふたりの目の前には、あの婦人の姿があった。

やはり雨傘はさしていないのだった。

閉じた雨傘を手に持ち　
服が濡れ、下着が透けて見えていた。

ぼくは弟の背中を押した。
「おまえ、教えてやりなよ」

弟の表情は複雑だった。

ぼくの表情も複雑だったはずだ。
「････雨が降っていますよ、って」
