水平線上に陸地が見えてきた。

デッキの上には乗客たちの笑顔があり　
乗客たちと一緒に船長も喜んでいた。

長かった航海も無事に終わろうとしている。

「ねえ、あそこ見てよ」
女の子が海面を指さす。

「人魚が泳いでいるわ！」

船長は苦笑し、そちらに視線をやり　
そして自分の目を疑ってしまう。

尾びれで水しぶきをあげながら　
海面から顔を出して女性が泳いでいたのだ。

他の乗客たちも騒ぎ始めた。
船長は自分が船長であることを思い出した。

彼は勇敢にも人魚に向かって叫んだ。
「おーい、人魚さーん！　こんにちわ！」

すると、人魚も叫び返してきた。
「あれー！　助けてー！」

それは悲痛な叫びであった。

彼女、上半身は人間なのに　
下半身はサメに飲み込まれていたのだった。
