～『あるときの物語』そして『パチンコ』を読んで～

忘れられない、印象的な英語の小説を紹介します✨
『あるときの物語』を初めて読んだ時、実をいうと、あまり気に入りませんでした。
4年後、別の小説『パチンコ』を読み終えた時、『あるときの物語』を通して作者さんが伝えたいことが、初めて分かりました。

The first time I read “ A Tale for the time being” by Ruth Ozeki in 2013, I was intrigued by its beauty, at the same time, the book driving me mad.
初めて"A Tale for the time being"を読んだ時、文章の美しさに心を惹かれましたが、少し嫌な気持ちになりました。

It is a story of a Japanese-American teenage girl who was brought up in the US coming to live in Tokyo due to her father's company's bankruptcy.
She is bullied by her Japanese classmates at school. The classmates are incredibly mean and cruel.
この小説は、アメリカで育った日系アメリカ人の少女が、父の会社の倒産が原因で日本に帰国することになり、日本の中学校で壮絶ないじめに会う・・・という物語です。

Honestly, I wanted to scream at the author, "Stop pretending. You know nothing about Japan!! Of course our country has serious bullies at schools, but your country has savage bullies and racial discrimination as well.
How dare you accuse and disgrace only Japanese people?"
正直な気持ちを言うと、私は著者のオゼキさんに対して、
「どうして日本のことをそんなに悪く書くの？もちろん、日本の学校にもいじめはある。でも、あなたの国にも人種差別やいじめはあるでしょう？日本だけを悪く言うなんて・・・」
という気持ちがありました。

4 years later, when I read Min Jin Lee’s “Pachinko”, I finally began to understand what Ruth Ozeki tried to tell us through “A Tale for the Time Being”.
ところが4年が過ぎて、韓国系アメリカ人のミン・ジン・リーさんの小説「パチンコ」を読んだ時、オゼキさんが小説を通して伝えたがっていることを、初めて理解したのです。

“Pachinko” is also a story of a Korean young lady who had to emigrate to Osaka, Japan in 1940s. No matter how hard she tried to adapt to the Japanese culture and learn Japanese language, she cannot be a Japanese and people look at her as a “Korean”.
『パチンコ』は、1940年代、韓国人の女性が日本の大阪市に移住し、在日韓国人として苦労して生きていくという物語です。
彼女がどんなに努力しても、日本語を覚え、日本の文化に馴染もうとしても、なかなか日本人になれない―。そんな苦労が描かれていました。

Yes, it was a story of the difficulties and isolation that many immigrants probably confront when they move to the new land.
Both novels are beautiful, at the same time, grotesque and savage. But they have something found in reality.
そう、ルース・オゼキさんの本も、リーさんの本も、特定の国を批判するのが目的で書かれたのではなく、
移民の人が普遍的に抱えている苦労と孤独を描いていたのです。
それはとてもリアリスティックに思えました。

私はこの2冊を英語で読んだのですが、2冊とも日本語に翻訳されていることが分かりました。

Thanks to "Pachinko", I was able to understand that Ms. Ruth Ozeki was not trying to criticize Japan but depicts more universal theme: the hardships of immigrants.
At the same time, I learned how Korean people living in Japan survived through running the pachinko shops.
『パチンコ』を読んだおかげで、ルース・オゼキさんに対する理解が深まって、感謝です。

また、今の日本の若者たちは、Kポップの明るいイメージしか知らないかもしれませんが、
在日韓国人の方たちがどんなに日本で苦労してきたか、パチンコ店経営くらいしか仕事がない中、すごい苦労をしながら生き抜いてきたかを、この小説で学ぶことができて勉強になりました。
