Day 7_MBA Journey_Leadership Simulation

Assuming we all work in an airplane manufacturing company, each one of us are assigned unexperienced role to collaborate together. It was very interesting leadership simulation to experience below points throughout each round.

Round 1: roles included like a notcher, stenciler and fabricator that most of were not clear what exactly we should all take action and in the best way. While our customer were in the room and she always gives direct order  With less directions, uncertain in our roles and goals and high expectations from our customer, most of us had great pressure and not much teamwork to each other. As a result, we have sold no airplane but only incurred cost.

Break for 15 minute and Meeting for 30 minute

Round 2: as we understood the assigned job and each role within the line production, we began to have more space physically and mentally to offer support for other departments. As our production line has increased productivity, it decreased stress level lower than round 1, however, we began to see people slacking off or wondering what they can support with. As a result, we successfully sold 5 units of airplanes in less amount of time with a bit increase in operation cost.

Break for 20 minute and Meeting for 30 minute

Round 3: as each workbench were scattered in the room, we first began moving all workbenches in one line to have clear operation view and reduce time in take over from one department to another. We were clear with our goal and operation task happening to each other that our productivity drastically increased. After 20 minutes had passed, there was a bit of conflict between an assistant team leader and team members as the leader called to stop creating more airplanes without an explanation while team members were passionate to create more. After the leader shared the reason, team members understood and all gathered at an examination site to cheer test-flyer and congratulate together every time our customer make a decision to purchase our airplane. Our engagement and energy level reached to the peak and stressed level was very low as we are aiming for same clear goal at the end. As a result, we successfully sold 12 units in total with much less operation cost, even less than round 1. However, some team members got disappointed when they heard another team sold 15 units.

What were the learnings:

1. Praising, recognition, offering help and checking in to individual and team are greatly important to maintain consistent goal and high energy level as  individual behavior affect greatly to an organization as a whole.

2. Leadership is not a role or position, but it is contribution to the team that everyone can be part of.

3. You are only competing again yourself.

This leadership simulation was so practical and in depth experiences to grasp idea of behavior and leadership changes within an organization.
