【へっぽこ英会話４Months③】"桃太郎"、意外と弱くて、ちゃんと謝る鬼たち
桃太郎。
日本人なら、誰もが１度は読んだことのあるストーリーではないだろうか？
でも、英語圏のネイティブ講師に話すと、「初めて聞いたよ」という反応である。そして、面白いストーリーだねという反応をもらえた。
まず、桃から赤ちゃんが生まれるところが、意外性があって面白いらしい。ハッピーエンドなところも良いと言われた。
私も英会話初心者ではあるが、何とか、知っている簡単な単語を並べて、説明できた達成感はある。
と言っても講師に随分訂正されたのだが。
講師が楽しんでくれると良いな、との思いで始めてみたが、回数を重ねるうちに、伝わる手ごたえがあって、こちらの方が楽しませてもらった。
さて、桃太郎に出てくる動物といえば、「犬と猿、雉」である。
犬はdog
猿はmonkey
雉・・・？
私からすると動物園に行かないとお目にかかれない生き物なので、英語で何と言うか考えたこともなかった。
でも今なら言える。

いつか、使う機会があるのだろうか？！
I want to talk about a Japanese story.
The title is Peach Boy.
One of the most famous stories in Japan.
日本で最も有名な話です。
Once upon a time, there was a old man and his wife.
He worked as a lumberjack and his wife did the laundry at the riverside every day.
おじいさんは木こり。おばあさんは川へ洗濯に。
One day, while there, she heard a loud noise .
She looked up and she saw a huge peach floating down the river.
She said, "What a huge peach!"
She took the peach home and her husband also went home.
桃が流れてきました。
なんて大きな桃なんでしょう。
持って帰りました（おばあさん、力持ち！笑）
When she tried to cut the peach, it opened by itself and inside was a baby.
So they decided to keep him and named him , Peachboy.
He grew up to be a strong boy who always helped his mother with the housework.
桃太郎と名付けて、育てました。
桃太郎はよく働きました。
Then One day, there were many demons who came into the village.
They stole treasures from the residents.
When Peachboy heard about what happened, he decided to fight the demons.
宝を奪っていきました。
桃太郎は、鬼と戦うことにしました。
His parents were worried about him.
So after his mother made the dumplings to take with him.
As he left his home, a dog came up to him.
He said "If you give me dumpling, I will come along with you and help you."
The Peach Boy agreed.
そして、おばあさんはだんごを作りました。
桃太郎は、団子を持って、家を後にしました。
犬が来て、「団子くれたらお供します」と言いました。
（団子ひとつで命を懸ける犬すげー）
After that a pheasant flew over to him and he made the same request as the dog.
The Peachboy also agreed.
Then a monkey also came up to him with the same request.
The Peach Boy also agreed.
Altogether, they went to go and fight the demons.
But there was a storm at the sea that tossed their boat back and forth.
Everything was calm the next morning when the sun came up.
They continue to the Demon Island.
And they could reached the Demon Island.
次の日、嵐が過ぎて、鬼ヶ島に着きました。
There was a large gate. The monkey climbed the gate and opened it to the boy.
They were fighting the demons.
The dog jumped up on the demons and bit them.
The monkey also jump up on the demons and scratched them.
The pheasant pecked the demons.
鬼が出てきました。
犬が噛み、猿がひっかき、雉がつつきました。
The Peachboy cast out the demons.
Finally they apologized and agreed to return the stolen treasures to the villagers.
They went back home and got buck one bye one their treasure.
Everyone could lived a happy life.
End of the story.
鬼は謝り、宝を返しました。
村のみんなは平和に暮らしましたとさ。

実は、日本に鬼ヶ島が実在するのを知っているだろうか？
鬼ヶ島は香川県にある女木島と言われている。
ちなみに桃太郎が住んでいたのは、岡山県らしい。
岡山に行くと、きびだんごが売られているからイメージが湧く。
一方で、香川は、うどん県とは言われているが、鬼ヶ島の話はあまり聞かない。女木島・・・一度は行ってみたい場所である。
