FIRST CAR IN LIFE

I bought a new car recently in Australia and also the first one in my life. My family hasn't had any and I've only driven just two times after I got the license. Since I wasn't confident enough if I could get a car in good condition and at a proper price, I asked Hugo, an Estonian friend, who is familiar with cars, to come for the inspection with me.

I used Gumtree for the purchase, an Australian social network website, where people put the advertisement for selling cars and buyers can contact with them. Once I found the car I liked, sending a message to the seller and arranging the date for inspection. The car I decided to inspect and at the end I bought is a second-hand station wagon made in 2005 by Mitsubishi. The price was $3,000 and the total mileage was 220,000 km.

For the inspection, Hugo took me in his car. On the way to the place, he advised me that I could negotiate for the price regardless of how good the car condition is. At the first contact with the seller on the phone, I thought he was a private seller but actually, he was a professional dealer. As arriving at the store, I called them, then one guy who put a vividly red turban on his head came out of the store. Once Hugo found the guy looked Indian, he sighed disappointedly as if bad fortune-telling happened exactly as told. He seemed to be even nervous. I asked him why, and he answered it was easier to negotiate with a private seller for the price down but it's not the case for the professional dealer, especially if they were Indians. But also he added it's tough to negotiate but the car they would sell was more reliable than private sellers'.

When the red turban guy showed us the car, its whole body was totally wet. It seemed to get soaked just before. And the red turban added he washed it for our inspection. I doubted what he's saying because the car was still dirty, had small stains all around the body, both the side mirrors and the windows. It made me think they were hiding oil leaking from the bottom. I revealed the anxiety to Hugo and asked how he thought. According to him, most of the used cars tend to have leaking oil bit or large. But we can find out how bad it is once we do a test drive. His comment and credibility made me relieved.

As I wrote before, I didn't have any confidence in driving so I asked him to do even the test drive instead of me. And since he said it's a good car, I decided to buy that. I don't have any knowledge or experience of a car but I have a friend I can trust.
