連日猛暑が続いていますが、みなさんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。私はクーラーをつけながら扇風機全開で過ごしています。

　今年も前期授業期間が終了し、試験期間に入りました。段々慣れていく自分に対してやる気を向上させる術がなく、ついついため息ばかりをついてしまいます。とにかくこなしたという感覚が強い今年の前期授業でした。

　一方、それ以外の仕事はどんどん増えています。特に新しい課程を開設するにあたり情報収集を続けています。そして、学内調整も少し進んだところいよいよ文部科学省に赴くことにしました。実は前職で文部科学省の職員さんと一緒に仕事をしたことがあり、その際何度か中に入ったことがあります。レトロな外観ですが、中は普通のオフィスビルなので少し不思議な感覚が記憶に残っています。久しぶりの東京出張ですが、トンボ帰りなのであまりゆっくりできなさそうです。

　また別の仕事としては、学生に関する相談対応が急激に増えています。今は立場上全学科の課題がある学生情報を把握しないといけないので、かなり負担感が増しています。担当するスタッフの努力で何とかしのいでいますが、スタッフ同士の人間関係のトラブルが生じて、このことでもなかなか気が休まることはありません。

　さらには大学規定や入試問題の作成、外部の審査や会議への出席、各種書類作成、挙句の果てには学生の海外渡航のための空港送迎と挙げればキリがないほど業務が積みあがっています。正直大学教員でここまで業務をこなしている人がどれだけいるのか知りたくなります。日本の中でトップクラスの業務量だという自負がありますが、それを確かめる方法は今のところなさそうですね。

　ただ、こんなに業務量をアピールしても別に大学教員を辞めたいとは思いません。なぜなら、この業務量を決めているのほとんど自分自身だからです。もちろん大学からの指示でこなしている業務もありますが、それは全体の業務からいうと半分もないような気がします。そして、何よりも大学教員は一人親方なので、ウザい上司からあれしろこれしろと指示されることは全くありません。これが大学教員という仕事の大きな魅力の１つだと私は思います。

　そして、この業務ももう１週間もすると急激に減少します。試験の採点という大きな業務が残っていますが、それをこなすと後は９月末まで夏休みなので一気に解放されます。今年は学生の合宿が目白押しなので、あまりゆっくりできないですが、それでも学生たちと一緒にいろんなところに出掛けるのは楽しいですね。今回の夏休みは体調管理が一番の仕事になりそうです。

　これから大学教員になる人には、自律して仕事をこなせる人になってほしいと思います。ONとOFFをうまく切り替えることができる人が大学教員に向いているような気がします。

End of previous period. (2023)

The heat wave continues day after day, how is everyone doing? I spend my time with the air conditioner on and the fan on full blast.

This year, the first semester ended and we entered the exam period. There's no way to improve my motivation as I get used to it, and I can't help but sigh. It was the first semester of this year where I had a strong sense of just doing it.

On the other hand, other jobs are becoming more and more common. In particular, we are continuing to gather information as we open new courses. And after some on-campus coordination, I finally decided to go to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Actually, I worked with a the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology employee in my previous job, and I went inside a few times during that time. It has a retro look, but inside it is an ordinary office building, so I remember a slightly strange feeling. It's been a while since I've been on a business trip to Tokyo, but I don't think I'll be able to relax much because I'm coming back from a dragonfly.

In another line of work, there has been a sharp increase in consultation services for students. Now I have to keep track of student information with assignments in all departments because of my position, so the burden is increasing considerably. I manage to get by with the efforts of the staff in charge, but there have been some problems in the relationship between the staff members, and even this has not been enough to put me at ease.

Furthermore, there is an endless amount of work involved in writing university regulations and entrance examination questions, attending external examinations and meetings, preparing various documents, and, to top it all off, transporting students to and from airports for international travel. Honestly, I am curious to know how many university teachers are doing their job so well. We pride ourselves on having one of the highest workloads in Japan, but there seems to be no way to confirm that at the moment.

However, I don't want to quit my job as a university teacher, even if I appeal my workload so much. That's because it's mostly myself who sets this workload. Of course, there are some jobs that are performed under the direction of the university, but that doesn't seem like half of the total work. And, most of all, university teachers are one-man masters, so they don't get any instructions from annoying bosses to do this or that. I think this is one of the great attractions of the job of a university teacher.

And this work, too, will decline sharply in another week. We still have a big task to do, which is grading exams, but once we do that, the rest of the work will be released at once because we have summer vacation until the end of September. There are so many student camps this year that I can't really relax, but it's still fun to go out to different places with the students. Taking care of my health is going to be my best job this summer vacation.

I want future university teachers to be able to work independently. I feel like a person who can switch it well between ON and OFF is suitable for university teachers.
