猛暑が続きますが、みなさんはいかがお過ごしでしょうか。私はエアコンの魔力にすっかり取りつかれて家から一歩も出れずです。

　さて、今週から試験期間に入り今までは違うタイムスケジュールを過ごしています。学生たちは試験の準備で忙しいですが、教員はこの期間は試験用紙を配布して監督して回収の繰り返しなので、それほど忙しいわけではありません。むしろ終わってからの真夏のサイテンの方が忙しくなります。

　そんな中でも学生からの相談はきます。さすがにいつもよりは少ないですが、中には深刻な相談もあるので気が抜けないですね。

　先日もある学生が生活が厳しいので大学を辞めるかもしれないと相談がありました。個人情報なのであまり詳しくは書けませんが、とても成績が優秀な学生です。しかし、その一方で私が大学で見ているその学生の姿と別の側面があるという情報も多方面が聞こえてくるので対応が難しいですね。

　特に家庭のことは、本人から情報しかないのでどこまで真実を伝えているのかわからない部分があります。なるべく学生のことは信じたいと思いますが、その一方で真実はいったい何なのかとい疑いの目を持ち続けなければならないのは、結構精神的にはキツイ部分もあります。

　恐らく学生たちはそれほど悪意があるわけではないでしょうが、学生たち独自の善意を起因とする行動が、時には周りの人々を傷つけるということを教員は常に警戒しなければなりません。そのため私は多くの人から情報を得る努力をしています。複数人が同じようなことを言うということは、確からしいと判断することができるからです。

　毎日毎日学生たちは今日の状態を質問して、常に最新の情報を得ています。相談してきた学生もその相談内容と成績で判断すれば、もっと前のめりで支援できる方法を考えたかもしれないです。しかし、今私が知りえる情報を総合的に判断すると一定の距離間を保った対応がベターだと思っています。いずれにせよ後1週間で学生たちの距離感もしばらくひらいた状況になります。この冷却期間が教員と学生にとって大事な期間だと私は思います。

　なかなか人を信じるということは難しいですが、いいも悪いも含めその人のことを受け止めていくことが大学教員に求められていると思います。研究者でもある大学教員には常にすべてのことに疑いの目を持つことが求められていますので、これから大学教員になる人は信じる心と疑う心の両方を持てるように訓練していただければと思います。

 The other day, I was told that a student might quit university because his life was difficult. I can't write in details because it's personal information, but I'm a very good student. However, on the other hand, I can hear the information that there are different aspects from what I see in the university, so it is difficult to deal with it.

 Especially about the family, we don't know how much we tell the truth because we only have information from the person. I'd like to believe in students as much as possible, but on the other hand, it's hard mentally to keep a suspicious eye on what the truth is.

 Perhaps the students are not so malicious, but teachers must always be wary that their own acts of goodwill can sometimes hurt others. That's why I try to get information from many people. It is because we can judge that it is certain that several people say the same thing.

 Every day, students ask questions about today's situation and keep up to date. Judging from the contents of the consultation and grades, the student who consulted with me might have thought of a way to support more leaning forward. However, judging from the information I know now, I think it is better to maintain a certain distance. In any case, within a week, the students' sense of distance will be relaxed for a while. I think this cooling period is an important period for teachers and students.

 It is difficult to believe in people, but I think that university teachers are required to accept them, whether good or bad. As a university teacher who is also a researcher, it is always necessary to have a skeptical eye on everything, so I hope that those who will become university teachers in the future will be trained to have both a trusting and a skeptical mind.
