This time with the Dezatore! I created a class about logo design and the advantages of creating mockups in real environments.

This time we had a few interns join, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to show our design team skills and learn something on the way.

The class was divided in two parts, first within 30 minutes, create a Logo design based on one of the themes, pet shop (of their favorite animal) or restaurant (of their favorite food).

Here are some of the logo designs. I think within the limited amount of time, some great concepts were created.

The second part was to place the just created logos within mockups of real life environments, such as store fronts and SNS platforms that I had prepared.

As we went over the work with each other, various members brought things up they noticed while designing but also after placing the logos in the real environment.

Designers got faced with situations that were not considered while designing initially and it forces the designers to go back to the drawing board and adjust the design to make it work.

Colour choices, sizes, combined/separated text and amount of detail where points that became apparent when placing the concepts in various environments.

What we could take from these lessons are; before starting the design phase, ask the right questions what the purpose is, to prepare ourselves and learn what the clients have in mind as well.

By placing the concept design in a real environment mockup, things that don’t work in the design become easily noticeable and it also provides a clear image for the client/reviewer to relate to…which can be important when signing off on the final design.

“デザトレ! Dezatore!" is a one-hour session set out weekly to explore, experiment, share skills, knowledge and ideas among ourselves. It is a curt and catchy sounding vocabulary we created from the words デザイン・トレーニング (dezain・toreeningu : design training) ☆
