実は、この歌 “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” の正確な起源は不明
元歌は1820年ころの英国まで遡る
窃盗罪で投獄される男が婚約者に忠実であることを誓い、帽子に柳（泣く木の意）の枝をつけて思いを馳せる
英国内で内容が幾つも異なって歌い継がれ、米国東部に伝わる

アメリカ南北戦争（1861-1865）のとき、
制服は歩兵が青、砲兵が赤、騎兵が黄色であったことから、黄色が兵士の象徴となり、
愛する男が戦場に赴き、残された女が恋人に抱く愛と貞操、
そして、恋人が無事に帰還する願いを込める意味に変わったとされる

西暦1917年に、ジョージ A ノートン（George A. Norton）により
"'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon (For Her Lover Who Is Fur, Fur Away)" 
と題して改めて作詞作曲、第二次世界大戦中に米国内で流行、
戦後、別の作詞作曲家によって異なった曲が数曲発表されている
西暦1949年には、リチャード ヘイジマン（Richard Hagemen, 1881-1966）により
映画 “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”（邦題：黄色いリボン） のために映画音楽化され、有名に
