踊り子のバーバラは、いつものようにウェスエンドのパブに出入していると、吟遊詩人から声をかけられて、謎の宝石を託された。また、バファル帝国の迷いの森に住むクローディアは、森の番人として見回りをしていると、帝国の親衛隊員であるジャンがモンスターに襲われていた。彼女はジャンを助けると、「今度、必ずメルビルに遊びに来てほしい」と言われ、ジャンは去っていった。

ジャンを助けたクローディアは、自分の育ての親であるオウルに報告に家に戻った。

「どうじゃった？」

「モンスターに追われた男が迷い込んでいたわ」

「帝国の地図みたい。もらったの。今度、ぜひ遊びに来いって」

「そうか。そうじゃの。お前ももう大人だし、外の世界を見ておいた方が良いかもな。行ってこい。どこへでも好きな所へ行くがいい。ただし、わしが呼んだら必ず戻ってくるんじゃぞ」

「ところで、おまえ、その男に名前を教えたか？」

クローディアは、メルビルへと旅立つことにした。ずっと迷いの森で生活していたクローディアは、外の世界を見ることに興奮していた。

「メルビル・・・帝国の首都・・・いったいどんな場所なのかしら？」

一方、フロンティアを中心に踊り子として日銭を稼いで生活していたバーバラは、開拓村の誘拐事件を解決するなどして、フロンティアではちょっとした有名人になっていた。

「なんだか、あの時、詩人から宝石を渡されてから、冒険したい気持ちが募っているわ・・・」

バーバラは、フロンティアから南のクジャラートへと伸びている「ニューロード」と呼ばれる道路を馬車で進んで、冒険の旅に出ることにした。

ニューロードを進んでいくと、クジャラート領内に入り、タルミッタという街に到着した。このタルミッタは、昔はクジャラートの首都だった。しかし、クジャラートは数百年前にエスタミルを占領して新しい首都としたため、最近はタルミッタは人口の流出が著しい。

タルミッタのいくつかのパブで踊りを見せて稼いでいると、ジャミルという青年から声をかけられた。

「あんた、冒険者の女かい？おいらの幼馴染の女の子、ファラが行方不明になっちゃったんだ。一緒に探してくれないかい？」

「あら・・・それは大変ね。何か手掛かりはあるかしら？」

「いや、突然、いなくなって、ファラの家族も心配しているんだ」

「よし、一緒に探しましょう！」

バーバラは、開拓村で少年が誘拐された事件を解決して以来、人助けすることにやりがいを感じるようになっていた。そのため、ファラを探すことにも協力することにした。

クジャラートの首都、エスタミルは海峡を挟んで南北に分かれており、南エスタミルで情報収集すると、他にも若い女性が多く行方不明になっているとの情報を得た。そして、南エスタミルのパブでマスターに話を聞いてみると、「やばい仕事だけど、やってみないか？」と聞かれた。

「やばい仕事ねえ・・・どんな仕事かしら？」

「詳しくは、あそこにいるお客さんに聞いて」

言われた通り、酒場にいた男性に聞いてみると、依頼内容を話してくれた。

「この国の首領、ウハンジ様は、わかい女性を集めていかがわしいことをしているとの噂だ。ウハンジ様の奥方からの依頼なのだが、女性が集められている場所を突き止めてほしい」

「え・・・若い女性・・・ひょっとして、ファラもそこにつかまっているんじゃ？」

バーバラたちは、北エスタミルのアムト神殿にウハンジが頻繫に出入しているとの噂を聞いた。

「その神殿が怪しいわね・・・」

神殿内部を調べていると、男が若い女を複数人、秘密の部屋へと連れていくのを発見した。

「あそこがハーレムなんじゃないかしら？ジャミル、行ってみる？」

「いや、男の俺が行くと、怪しまれるだろう。女装して、ハーレムの一員を装って入るのがいいと思う」
