On watching movies on vacation -Murakami Asahi-do -Haruki Murakami-

Continuing from the previous story, I stayed in Sapporo for three days. I didn't have any particular reason to be there; I just stopped by because I had the opportunity. So, what did I do in Sapporo? First, I went to a beer hall and had three glasses of draft beer for lunch (why is beer so delicious in Hokkaido?). Then, I watched a double feature of "Rambo" and "Shaolin Temple." After that, I had dinner, of course with more beer. After the meal, I went to a jazz club and had some whiskey. The next day, I went to the cinema again and watched William Wyler's "Detective Story," Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard," and "Blade Runner." And at night, I drank again.

I'm not sure why I felt the need to go all the way to Sapporo to watch movies. But whenever I visit an unfamiliar place, I strangely feel the urge to watch movies. So, I have entered various movie theaters and watched all sorts of films throughout Japan. When I watch movies in a movie theater in an unknown city, the films seem to penetrate into my body in a peculiar way. Perhaps it's because the essence of the enjoyment of movies is intertwined with a sense of melancholy. When I was eighteen and tired of studying for exams, I took a boat trip from Kobe to Kyushu on a whim. I arrived in Kumamoto and went to a movie theater where I watched a double feature of "The Glory Guys" starring James Caan (it was a good movie) and "A Blindfold." After leaving the theater, while wandering aimlessly, a woman approached me and said, "Hey, will you do it for 500 yen?" The price of 500 yen was suspiciously cheap even at that time, so I declined and went to another movie theater in Beppu Village. It was a Toei movie theater, and I remember the admission fee was around 500 yen. I thought to myself, "Isn't the world a strange place?" At that time, I was in love, so I couldn't believe that I could have sex for the same price as watching a movie. By the way, it's amazing how there is a building in Sapporo that houses ten movie theaters together.
