1955年は一般的にロックンロールが生まれた年として認識されている。それは誤りだ。
ロックンロールの始まりは未だ特定されておらず幾つかの候補の内の一つが1955年であったという事のみが事実だった。

Bill Haley & His Cometsの1954年のシングル"Thirteen Woman"のB面としてリリースされた"Rock Around the Clock"が次作の"Shake, Rattle and Roll"のヒットを受けて注目されましたが、小ヒット止まりでした。

翌年に映画「暴力教室」のサウンドトラックとして"Rock Around〜"が使用された事で再度注目され、夏にビルボードのヒットチャートで8週連続1位の快挙を成し遂げた事を指してロック元年が1955年と誤認されました。

1955年はロックンロールが初めて総合ヒットチャートで首位を取った年と言う表現が望ましいです。ロックンロールが生まれた年では無い事は彼が証明してくれています。

Bill Haleyは先に挙げた"Shake Rattle〜"もそうでしたが、1953年に"Crazy Man, Crazy"というロックンロールソングをビルボードのヒットチャートに送り込んでいる。

ただその事実を知ってもロックの歴史上、1955年が重要な年であった事は揺るがない。

①Bo Diddleyのボ・ディドリー・ビート
②Little Richardの女装メイク、エネルギッシュなシャウト
③Elvis PresleyとChuck Berryに見られるR&Bとカントリーを融合させたスタイル

少なくともこの3点は1955年に生まれた新しい現象であった。

①に関しては強力なビートを全面に押し出した新しいスタイルのギタープレイでした。それはロックンロールとしか言いようのない演奏であり新しい世代のブルースでもありました。

②は彼が同性愛者である事をカミングアウトにしていた事が当時前代未聞であった。それをオープンにしていた事が容姿にも歌唱にも現れて、従来のR&Bをロックンロールとして昇華させました。

③は白人と黒人の音楽の融合がロックンロールの源流である事はロックの歴史に興味がある人は大前提として心得ているでしょう。しかしElvisの功績は認識していても、Chuck Berryの功績は余りピンと来ていない人が多いのかも知れません。彼もまた"Maybellene"でウエスタン・スウィングのフィーリングをブルースに融合させました。ブルースの高速化がそれをロックンロールへと進化させたのでした。
