We’re deep into the autumn season now and at many places in Japan the beautiful autumn foliage is attracting many visitors. Due to the impact of COVID-19 this year we will probably not hear about the annual crowds at scenic temple gardens in Kyoto and Kamakura. However, even after the post-COVID-19 recovery local administrations should aim not just at increasing the number of visitors to popular autumn color sites, but at developing new ways of monetizing from this natural beauty. In recent years foreign travelers have been especially attracted to Japan’s stunning autumn foliage views, but unlike the sakura season there are still few products on offer for increasing spending during autumn viewing.
Kyoto city, which often experiences considerable congestion during the autumn period, is among the leaders in introducing special offers for monetizing from autumn colors viewing. Several of the city’s scenic temples and gardens offer prior reservations of early-morning entrances. 

While most of these offers are available for small groups at a modest price, there are also options for exclusive private renting of the entire temple/garden at a higher price.
