大原は京都市北東部に位置し、京都駅からおよそ20km、車でおよそ40分から45分ほどの場所にある。比叡山の麓であり四方を山で囲まれたこの地には、春は花、夏は緑、秋は紅葉、冬は雪と、季節ごとに美しい表情を湛えるのどかな里山風景が広がっている。柴漬けや京野菜の産地としても有名であるほか、かつては山で伐採した木を炭や薪にする炭焼きの里でもあり、それらを頭の上に乗せて街で売り歩く（某有名アニメに登場する鬼狩りの主人公と同じ職業かも）“大原女（おはらめ）”と呼ばれる行商の女性たちの名でも知られた地域である。

Converse with your inner self in the secluded land of Ohara

Ohara is located in the northeast of the city at the foot of Mt. Hiei some 20 kms from Kyoto station and can be reached in about 40 to 45 minutes by car. Enclosed by mountains on all four sides, this rural hamlet has a different face for each season, resplendent with blooming flowers in spring, luscious greenery in summer, red foliage in autumn, and snowscapes in winter. Ohara is known for shibazuke pickles and Kyō-yasai (Kyoto vegetables), and in the past for firewood produced from lumber from the local mountains. Many people will be familiar with Ohara’s famous oharame women peddlers who would venture down into town carrying firewood on their heads to sell (Yes, just like a certain demon-hunting anime character!).

大原の寺院といえば三千院が有名だが、三千院のすぐ近くに隠れた名刹が存在している。それが宝泉院だ。すぐそばにある本堂勝林院は、魚山流の聲明の根本道場のひとつで、大原でも最大規模の道場が開かれた聖地だが、宝泉院はその本堂の僧坊としておよそ800年前に創建された。
見所はなんといっても客殿から見る巨大な松の古木である。樹高11m、樹齢700年ともいわれるその立派な松の木は「五葉の松」と呼ばれる５つの葉を有す縁起の良い松。俳人・高浜虚子の句にも詠まれ、京都市の天然記念物に指定されるなど名木との称号がふさわしい。そして、扇型をしたその雄大な松を中心に、客殿の柱と鴨居を額縁に見立て、まるで絵画を観るように庭園を鑑賞できることから「額縁庭園」との名でも親しまれている。700年の年月を生き伸びてきた樹が放つエネルギーと気高さゆえ、その景色からは観る者を圧倒する迫力が感じられる。

また客殿の西方には大原の山々を竹林越しに観ることができる。この竹林はあえて山々の風景を遮るように植えられたのだそうだ。理由は雄大な風景を竹林の奥に見ることで遠近感が生まれ、より奥行きを感じられるようになるからだという。

Ohara’s biggest drawcard is undoubtedly the famous Sanzen-in temple, but just nearby there’s another noted but hidden gem of a temple called Hōsen-in. Hōsen-in was built about 800 years ago as one of the monks’ quarters for the neighboring Shōrin-in temple, the birthplace of shōmyō Buddhist chanting and the largest training hall in Ohara, and now operates as a sub-temple of Shōrin-in.
The highlight of Hōsen-in is a giant old pine tree that is the center point of the temple’s “picture frame garden”, so called because when viewed from the Kyakudan (temple reception hall), the room’s beams and posts appear to frame the garden like a painting. Approximately 11 meters tall and some 700 years old, the tree itself is a magnificent fan-shaped five-needle pine, an auspicious variety named for its needles that sprout in bunches of five. It’s mentioned in the haiku of poet Takahama Kyoshi and designated as a Natural Monument by the City of Kyoto. Looking out over the garden, one is overwhelmed by the sense of nobility and vitality exuded by this grand elder of trees. Looking west from the Kyakuden, you can see the mountains of Ohara through a bamboo trees. This bamboo trees were intentionally designed to obstruct the view of the mountains in order to create visual perspective and depth in the scenery.

このお寺での拝観にはお抹茶・和菓子がセットになっている。抹茶は住職である藤井宏全さんの出身地である愛知県の抹茶を使っているのだそうだ。フレッシュできめ細かい泡が立ち、甘美の奥に苦味がどっしりと感じられる抹茶だ。こうして人里離れた山深い大原の地にある隠れた名刹・宝泉院で、畳に座り、名庭を眺めながら、心静かにお抹茶をいただく時間。それはある種のメディテーションであり、マインドフルネスをもたらす、そんなひとときになることだろう。お抹茶とともに出されるのはニッキ風味の餡子を求肥で包んだひと口サイズの菓子で、若狭屋末則がこのお寺のために作ったオリジナルの和菓子なのだが、その名が「ひととき」というのも、きっと偶然ではあるまい。

Admission to the temple includes matcha tea and a Japanese sweet. The matcha is sourced from Aichi Prefecture where head priest Kōzen Fujii was born. It has fresh, fine bubbles and a sweetness underpinned by a robust bitterness. The sweet consists of cinnamon-flavored bean paste wrapped in a soft gyūhi rice cake, and is made especially for Hōsen-in by confectionary shop Wakasaya-minori. It’s so peaceful here in this out-of-the-way spot in the mountains of Ohara. Slowly sipping on matcha in the tatami-matted room and basking in the garden view feels like a kind of meditation—one of those moments that reminds you to be more mindful. We suspect it’s no coincidence that the name of the sweets served here is Hitotoki—“a moment”
