英語の会話におけるユーモア

冒頭ではまず、英語のユーモアに関する知識をご紹介します。後半ではイギリスで日常的によく使われるユーモアをご紹介いたします。

Understanding British humour

Irony
実際に起こった事実や感情と反対の言葉を言うユーモアです。

Sarcasm
Ironyは基本的に会話を面白くするためのテクニックの一つですが、受け手との関係性や言い方によっては不快（offensive）なものになってしまう可能性もあります。これは’Sacasm’と呼びます。

Puns (a play on words)
一言で言うと、英語の駄洒落のことです。同じ発音でスペルが異なる２つの単語、音や発音のリズムが似た単語、またはスペルが全く同じで２つの意味を持つ単語を使った、言葉遊びです。

これはどちらも同じ発音を持つ「pear」と「pair」を使った例です。「ペア（pair）でください」と言ったお客さんに対し、店員さんが「洋梨（pear）」を渡すというジョークです。

イギリスでよく使われるユーモア

Banter（からかい・冷やかし）
「皮肉」と言うと聞こえは良くありませんが、日本語にも「からかう」や「冷やかし」という言葉があります。イギリスではお互いにからかい合うことは、基本のルールを押さえておけば、よく ’Banter’ として許されています。

Self-deprecation（自虐）
イギリスで特によく使われるユーモアに ’self-deprecation’ があります。これはIronyの一種で、いわゆる自虐ネタのことです。Banterよりも安全で使いやすいユーモアである一方、精神面において悪い影響をもたらすことも懸念されています。

Understatement（控えめな表現）
事実や物事を、意図的に実際よりも控えめに表現する ‘Understatement’ はイギリス人ならではのユーモアです。例えば暴風雨の外の天気を見て ”It’s a bit windy, isn’t it?” （ちょっと風強くない？）と言ったら、それは間違いなくUnderstatementです。

Deadpan
そして最後に、British humourを一層ユニークにさせるのが ’deadpan’ です。Understatementの要素の一つであり、無表情、またはいかにも真面目な表情、そしてフラットなトーンでさらっとジョークを言うのです。

シリアスな内容に相反し、終始deadpanによるジョークの連続で、内容よりも次にどんな笑いの仕掛けが来るのかを期待してしまいます。いい意味での映像の”チープさ”も笑いを誘います。

Firstly, I will be touching on humour in English. Then I will talk you through some common British humour based on the blog below.

Understanding British humour

Irony
The irony is used to say something purposely opposite to what happened or you felt.

Sarcasm
While irony is a tool of language to make a conversation light and friendly, it could come across as offensive depending on the relationship with another person and the way of being ironic. The form of irony intended to insult another person is considered to be sarcasm.

Puns (a play on words)
A pun is a humorous use of a word that has the same or similar sounding but has a different meaning.

Here is an example of using these words, pear and pair, which have the same pronunciation. The customer asks the grocer for a pair of pears, but the grocer gave her a pear as a joke.

British Humour

Banter（make fun of someone, tease someone）
When I say ‘sarcasm’, it doesn’t always sound good. But, in the UK, it's often excused as 'banter" to make fun of each other as long as you follow the basic rules of it.

Self-deprecation
There is one form of irony particularly used In the UK, which is ‘self-deprecation’. Although it’s safer humour, there is a concern that it can affect your mental health.

Understatement
It is to describe something in a way that deliberately makes it seem less important, serious, and bad than it really is. For example, if you look at the stormy weather outside and say "It's a bit windy, isn't it?", it's an understatement.

Deadpan
Finally, what makes British humour even unique is ‘deadpan’. It's part of an understatement and is to make a joke while looking or seeming serious.
