こんばんは～今回はしほが記事を担当しました！

今回は、私が気になった人　菅野 静さんにインタビューをしてきました。

ホスピタリティマーケティングという観光学の授業を受けていた時に、ゲストスピーカーとして静さんが講義してくださったのが、出会ったきっかけです。静さんは、湯治にはまって鉄輪に引っ越してきて、湯治を広めるお仕事を鉄輪でしている人です。湯治に関わるお仕事をする前のお話や、湯治について沢山語っていただきました。

別府の温泉のように熱い静さんの湯治に対する愛と熱を感じてみては、、？♨

Good evening, I (Shiho) was in charge of this time!

This time, we interviewed Shizuka Kanno who I was interested in.

The trigger I knew about her is that when I was taking the class of hospitality marketing which is majoring in hospitality & tourism, she came to the class as a guest speaker. She moved to Kannawa because she has been addicted to Toji, and is doing the jobs to spread Toji in Kannawa. We could hear about the story before coming to Kannawa and about Toji.

Why don’t you feel heart and love for Toji like the hot spring of Beppu from her…? ♨

生き生きした鉄輪に一目ぼれ/ Fell in love at the first sight in energetic town “Kannawa”.

私が湯治にはまってしまって家族と鉄輪に来たら、ここ良いなって一目惚れした。古い湯治宿をイノベーションされて新たな価値としてオープンしていたり、アップデートしていく活気を感じたりした

Once I was obsessed with Toji and came to Kannawa with my family, I felt love at the first sight that it’s a really good place. The old Toji lodge was reborn with a new value and I felt the energy of updating the town.

湯治は、湯で治すと書くように体や心を温泉の力で養生することなのですが、そんな湯治ができる温泉地・湯治場ではいつの間にか人生相談が始まっちゃったりするような温かい雰囲気にハマった静さん。湯治宿は自分の体と心のためにあるので、食事や睡眠も時間に縛られることなく、こんなに自由で、今こそ心身が疲弊してしまうような現代の人たちにすごいフィットするような感じがするこの湯治が知られていない・活用されていないのが勿体無いなと思ったそう。そんな風に思いつつ、でも何をしたら良いか分からないまま、湯治場を巡る旅の最後に立ち寄った鉄輪に一目惚れしたんだそう。

As it is written 湯(hot spring)治(cure), Toji is an action to cure a human's body and their feelings by taking a hot spring. Shizuka-san feels attracted to the atmosphere of Toji which sometimes can hold life counseling, and can easily communicate with other people. She thought the workers who don't know Toji should visit Toji lodging because it is actually for people to rest their body and their minds. In this place, users aren't restricted to the time on meal and sleeping, they can spend their time freely. She expected that this style will bring potential benefits to current workers for those who are restricted by time and have busy lives. At the time when she came to Kannawa, she was struggling with the act of what she will do next. But she fell in love at the first sight with the last destination of her Toji trip.

鉄輪の湯けむりがとても有名だと聞いて高台から実際に湯けむり、たなびく鉄輪の街を見た時に、ぽつぽつと灯っていく町あかりからここで暮らしている人たちがこの街を支えているんだという印象を受けた静さん。そして、鉄輪の温泉が生き生きしていて、女将さんがとっても元気で、昔の旅館を活かしてカフェやギャラリーをしているさまを見て、アップデートしていく街と感じたんだとか。

Shizuka-san heard that Kannawa is famous for steam from hot springs, so she decided to go to the view spot. She found some light from the building, and she was impressed that this town is supported by residents. Moreover, Shizuka-san felt this town is updating because the characteristics of Kannawa hot springs are being vivid, the landlady has attractive energy and is changing the style of the old lodge to cafe and gallery.

何か湯治に関わる仕事に就きたいと思っていた静さんは、

Shizuka-san wanted to do regarding Toji so...

ここで女性が新しくプロジェクトをやっていくってなったときにきっと受け入れてくれるんじゃないかという直感がして、私も何か湯治のことで役に立ちたいし、ここだったら何かできるかも、チャレンジできるかも。と思った。

I was looking for jobs that related to Toji. Then I thought that Kannawa is a place that can make my dream come true. Especially, Kannwa will accept me as a woman that can challenge new projects, I felt I can challenge anything here. She thought.

リノベートされたお宿や旅館だった建物を湯治文化を伝えるギャラリーとして活用しているところをみて、

私もアイデアが浮かぶかもしれないと思い、とりあえずここや！住んでたら分かるやろぐらいの感じで、なにも解が出ていないまま、ただぴんと来て鉄輪に引っ越して来た。

When she saw the gallery for telling Toji culture that the accommodation and Japanese style hotel were renovated, she thought I might come up with some ideas, maybe I can find something if I’m living here. So she followed her intuition and moved to Kannawa without any vision.

とりあえずここや！と思って鉄輪に引っ越したということを聞いた私（しほ）は、勢いがあるなと思いました。

By knowing that she moved to Kannawa by following her thoughts, I (Shiho) thought that she had the power to decide and act by hearing that she came to Kannawa by following her instinct.

温泉で体を治癒する湯治/ Toji which cure the body with the hot spring.

湯治という言葉だけしか知らなかった私たちは静さんに「湯治ってなんですか？」と湯治の歴史について聞いてみました。

We who don’t know the meaning of Toji asked her about the history of Toji with what Toji is?

静さんによると湯治は、温泉で体を治癒するということ。仏教伝来とともに温泉・入浴が日本にも伝わり、西洋医学が隆盛する江戸時代までは火傷したらアロエを塗って治したり、薬草を煎じて飲むなど伝承医療が一般的だった。湯治もその伝統医療の一つ、薬のように使われていたそうですが、湯治の旅は武士や貴族等上級階級でしかできなかったことでした。

戦で負傷する武士たちが温泉を利用して傷を癒したりリラックスしたりする文化は、江戸時代、民衆にも広く受け入れられ、伊勢参り・熊野詣でのように、湯治にいくこともひとつの旅のかたちとなっていった。こうして湯治が一般化するのは江戸時代のこと。江戸時代末期からは西洋医学が入ってきて、伝統医療が徐々にニーズが少なくなってきた経緯があります。

According to Shizuka-san, Toji is curing the body with the hot spring. The hot spring and taking a bath was told to Japan with Budda, than curing a skin burn with aloe and drinking the medicinal herb from medical science of western were one of the basic medical. Toji is also one of those and was used as medicine but only samurai and the upper class could do this.

The culture of samurai who have injuries cured with the hot spring was accepted by people in the Edo period, so going to Toji became one thing of the trip like Ise pilgrimage. Like this, it’s the Edo period that Toji became a generalization. Western medical science was spread to Japan from the end of the Edo period, the need for traditional medicine became less.

ちなみに、江戸時代には関所があって自由に旅行ができず、そこを通るのに届け出をしなければいけないときに、湯治だけは関所を通るための正当な目的として認められていたそう。湯治という目的で遠くの藩の温泉に行きたいって時に湯治願いを出して認められたら通ることができ、それを唯一認められている旅行だった。

In passing, although people couldn’t travel in the Edo period because of a barrier when people had to apply, only Toji was permitted to pass a barrier. Toji is the one of permitted travel because the aim of Toji could be rightful.

そして、昭和に入ると田植えをする農民たち・炭鉱民等の休暇・骨休めのための湯治になっていった。冬湯治・泥落とし・さなぶりなどと言われ、年中通して体と心のリラックスのために温泉湯治があったそうです。しかし、農業や炭鉱業から離れていく過程で、その文化も忘れられていき、湯治という言葉され知らない人たちも増えていった。

In the Showa period, Toji has become the hot spring for farmers who are doing rice fields, break of people and relaxation. The hot spring was called Winter Toji, scraping the mud and Saraburi. Then these were used throughout the year for relaxation of the heart and body. But in the process people don't farm and coal mine, this culture of Toji was forgotten then people who don’t know the word of Toji was increased.

静さんにとっての湯治/ Toji for Shizuka-san.

湯治にハマり、鉄輪に引っ越してきた静さんにとっての湯治についても語っていただきました。

She talked about the Toji for her who moved to Kannawa because she was addicted to Toji.

湯治って湯に入るだけではない。体とか心を見つめ直す時間。他愛のない話をしたり、ボーッとする時間があったり、空を眺めたり。湯治に来ている人たちの間で交流とか地域性とか、絶妙に絡み合うから、それを全部ひっくるめて湯治。おかずを分け合ってお隣さんから佃煮を頂いたりとか、空が綺麗ですねって共有するとか、そういうことも全部、地域性というか湯治だなって
Toji is not only taking a bath, but it is also time that we can reconsider hearts and bodies. It’s good for talking, doing nothing, and seeing the sky. Since interaction with people who are coming to Toji and locality are intertwined, they are also Toji. Sharing meals, communicating like the sky is nice, and all of these localities are part of Toji.
そんな静さんは、湯治にくると心があったまりますとおっしゃっていました。

Shizuka-san said Toji makes my heart warm.

ホテルでも旅館でもないめちゃめちゃ自由な湯治/ A very free place Toji that is neither hotel nor Japanese traditional hotel.

朝食の時間を聞いて準備してくれるよくあるホテルや、布団を片づけてくれるような旅館は、静さんにとって、最初は良かった。でも、朝食の時間が胃袋的に７時か８時かわからない！もうちょっとゆっくりしたいのに！などと思い、だんだんよくあるホテルと旅館のサービスがめんどくさく感じてきた静さん。そんなホテルとも旅館とも一味違う、”めちゃくちゃ自由な湯治”について、教えてくれました。

In the beginning, Shizuka-san enjoyed the hotels which serve breakfast with corrected time and Japanese-style hotels which take away futon. But she doesn’t know whether the time for her stomach is fit at 7 o’clock or 8 o’clock! She thinks she wants to spend a little more time without a schedule! Therefore she became bothered gradually by that trip style. Then she told us about “very free Toji” which is different from the hotels and Japanese-style hotels.

本来の湯治宿は、部屋だけの提供で、お布団や暖房器具などは全てオプション。あとはあなたのお好きなスタイルで（という感じ）。例えばお布団100円、暖房器具一日50円みたいな料金設定があるところもありました。最近は、お布団は最初から付いてるところもあるし、エアコンもWi-Fiも付いてるってとこも多いですが、カスタマイズできるということになり、それって裏返したらめちゃめちゃ「自由」ってことですね。

よくあるホテルや旅館での15時のチェックインにしないといけない、朝食後部屋に帰ったら、もっと寝たいのに布団が片付けられてる、翌日10時までにチェックアウト、といった決められたルールは湯治宿にはないことも多く、また長期滞在になるからこそ暮らしに近くなっていく。

湯治宿は温泉の力で体を治す場所なので、温泉の質はもう抜群。掛け流しのフレッシュな、殺菌消毒していない、オーガニックな温泉。食事や布団敷きのような特別なサービスが用意されていないので逆にほったらかしにしてくれるし、自分でお布団どうぞみたいな感じ。いつまでも寝てられるし、ご飯も基本自炊。自分の胃袋と相談しながら、体の状態と相談しながら選べる。

The Accommodations of Toji are only the rooms so futon and heating appliance are an option. It’s the style you like. For example, futon is 100 yen, heating appliances are 50 yen per day. These days, although futon, air conditioner, and WiFi have already been prepared since we can customize some options, that’s very very “freedom”

We have to check in until 3 p.m. like hotels, futon is put away after breakfast, checking out until 10 a.m. in hotels. But this rule isn’t in Toji. Since we can spend a long time, Toji will be close to the living.

Since the accommodations of Toji are the place to cure by the power of the hot spring, the quality of the hot spring is amazing. That is a fresh, non-disinfected, and organic hot spring. It’s like please prepare futon by yourself because the service like preparing futon and foods are not in there. So we can sleep until we want to sleep and foods are basically ourselves. We can decide it by thinking and consulting our stomachs.

今までの湯治女子の活動　The Toji-Joshi's activities so far.

まず、”湯治ぐらし”シェアハウスに住んでいる１期の子たちを中心に、温泉と湯治の発信をしてもらっています。温泉の地質学や観光学上から学ぶような温泉マイスターの勉強を通じて、温泉分析表の読み方や多角的に温泉のことを知ってもらっている。

彼女たちには、そこで得た知識をもとに、大学生目線で同じ世代ぐらいの人たちに温泉の良さを伝えていくような活動をしてもらっているとのこと。湯治女子の発信の仕方は、Instagramが中心。

コロナ以前は満月の時にとれた野草を使って体の免疫力を上げる料理を調理していたそう。助産師さんに来てもらって、薬草を燃やして、パイプの中に入れてリンパを刺激するような“温活”の方法を体験してもらうというような活動もしていたのだとか。

他にも温泉で染めるのれん制作プロジェクトなど、広い意味での湯治にまつわる活動を形にしてきた。

People who are living in Toji-gurashi are posting about hot springs and Toji. They are learning from multiple aspects which is like how to read an analysis table of hot springs throughout the study of hot springs that we can learn from geology and tourism.

They are doing activities to tell good points about hot springs based on the knowledge they got from people who are university students. The way to tell is mainly Instagram.

Before COVID-19, they were cooking the food which makes our body immune to the strength of the body with native grass which is collected on the day of the full moon.

Other activities were activities that are related to Toji widely such as projects to make Japanese curtains.

イベントやりたかったけど、コロナでしづらい状況で、落ち着いたらもっといろんなイベントとかをやってきたい。みんなで映画見ようとか、おばあちゃんとかに来てもらって料理を教えてもらおうとかアイデアいっぱいあるんだけど、やっぱりコロナでは配慮すべき点がたくさんあって… と今のコロナの状況に苦しんできた様子がうかがえた。

Although I wanted to do an event, it wasn’t easy, so I want to do some various events after OVID-19 calms down. We have many ideas such as watching movies with everyone and cooking with grandmother but we have to think COVID-19…..Like this, she was bothered with now situation.

しかし、そんな中でもしずかさんが温めてきた新しい計画が実るようで...！

But, it seems the plan Shizuka-san was thinking will be realized soon….!

なんと、新しく温泉付きのシェアハウスを2つオープンさせることが決まったんだとか。今ある「湯治ぐらし1」と、新たに2021年2月にオープンする「湯治ぐらし2」は女子向けのシェアハウスにしているので、互いに行き交いを生み、交流もできたらいいなぁと考えているという。

そして、3つめのシェアハウスは、湯治女子だけでなく湯治男子はないの？という男子の声もあり、男子の熱が上がってきたことを受け、「湯治ぐらし3」を2021年3月にオープンする。11部屋あるすごく大きいところだから、男子とファミリー、外国人と日本人、シニアと若者などの組み合わせも今後考えていると教えてくれた。「湯治ぐらし1/2/3と交流もまた生まれるから面白い！」とおっしゃっていました。湯治ぐらし3は、現在学生や社会人６人の仮入居者が決まっているとのこと。

家を探している人や、湯治に惹かれた人はお早めに静さんに連絡することお勧め♨

ちなみに今のシェアハウスは、APUの学生だけでなく、別府大学の方や社会人の方もいるのだとか。人との繋がりが広がりそうだなと私（しほ）は感じる。

The opening of two new shared residences with onsen is arranged! The two shared residences, “Toji-gurashi 1” and “Toji-gurashi 2” which will open in February 2021, are only for girls, so she hopes the communication among those shared residences will be active.

And the third shared residence “Toji-gurashi 3” will open in March 2021 and it’s for boys residents. Boys are asking why there is no Toji-danshi even though there is Toji-joshi, so she decided on it and found a huge place that has 11 rooms. Due to it having many rooms, there are many possibilities for combination, boys and family or foreigner and Japanese, senior and young and more, thus she is thinking of it. She said, “the interaction of Toji-gurashi 1/2/3 will be interesting (once it opens)!”.

It’s a recommendation to get in touch with Shizuka-san early for people who are searching for a residence or felt an interest in Toji!

Actually, there are APU students and students from Beppu university and workers as well, so I (Shiho) feel that it can make a wide network.

今後は、住民とお仕事で来るようなワーケーション・リモートワークな方々が混じり合うような環境を作れたらいいなと今後の湯治ぐらしの展望を教えて頂いた。

She told us that she wants to make an environment where citizens and people who are doing workstations or telecommuting are staying in one place in Kannawa and other things for Toji’s future hope.

湯治を通じて女子を応援する『湯治女子』　”Toji-Joshi” Empowering girls through Toji

湯治女子という名前から始めた理由も聞かせていただいた。

We asked why she started with the name Toji-joshi.

まだ私が若かった頃に流行ってた「森ガール」みたいな感じで、湯治のことをもっと広めたいから湯治女子って自分のことを名付けてた。湯治女子っていうコミュニティーがあったらいいなって思っていた。そしてたまたまここの寮を女子寮にしちゃったから、湯治女子と彼女たちをそのようなコミュニティーネームとして一緒に活動してもらってもいいかなって言うことで始まった。

It was like a "Mori Girl" that was popular when I was young, and I named myself a hot spring girl because I wanted to spread the word about hot springs. I wish I had a community called Toji-joshi. And since I happened to turn the dormitory here into a women's dormitory, I started by asking Toji-joshi and them to work together as such a community name.

人生前半戦に恋愛・就職・結婚・出産など、何かと頑張らないといけない女子を応援したかったのと、私が湯治のくらしをしている中でわかってあげられるのは女子かな〜というところから、まずは女子向けのシェアハウスを作った。温泉に入ったら素直になれるし、湯治を通じていろんな生き方に触れてもらいたい。生き方は1人1人にそれぞれあって、決まったレールはない、自ら編み出していくことなんだっていうこととかを湯治女子の活動を通して伝えたい。そういうやり方で自分の人生を見直したり、キャリアをどうしようとか考えるきっかけになってもらったらいいなぁって。

I wanted to support girls who had to do their best in the first half of their lives, such as romance, employment, marriage, and childbirth, and I think it's the girls that I can understand while living in Toji. First of all, I made a shared house for girls. Once you enter the hot springs, you can be honest, and I want you to experience various ways of life through Toji. Through the activities of the Toji-joshi, I would like to convey that each person has their way of life, there is no fixed rail, and that they should create their own. I hope it will allow you to review your life and think about what to do with your career in that way.

湯治ぐらし3のオープンに伴い、「湯治男子」コミュニティも発足予定にしていますが、いずれはジェンダー関係なく、湯治ワンワールドを作れたらいいなと思っています。

With the opening of Toji-gurashi 3, we are planning to launch a "Toji-danshi" community, but She hopes that we can eventually create a Toji-Oneworld regardless of gender.

ずっとキャリアウーマンできたので、キャリアについてはひとつの事例としてアドバイスできるところもあります。シェアハウスのテーマとして、キャリアとか仕事とか考えられるような、生き方とかをテーマにしても面白いかなとも話していた。

I have been a career woman for a long time, so I can give some advice on my career as an example. The theme such as how to live would be interesting as the theme of the shared house because we can consider career and jobs. She said.

未来は村を作るかもしれない　I may make a village in the future.

いつか、理想の湯治場、理想郷みたいなのを作りたいなぁ。それは宿なのかまだわからない。村かもしれないし、山かもしれない。村長になってるかも笑 湯治の様々なファクターがギューって詰まってる場所をやりたいなぁって。村長しちゃう？（笑）

Someday, I want to make an ideal Toji-place and village. I don’t know if it's a lodge, a village, or a mountain or maybe I will be a village mayor. I want to make a place where many factors of Toji are gathered inside of one place.

でもこれからしていきたいことはやっぱりイベントだそう。いろんな人に湯治の世界を分かってもらえるようなイベントや、行事に関与してもらいたい。そうするとアイデアとか企画が増えるかもだし。

She absolutely wants to hold some events for now. Creating an event of sharing the Toji world for a lot of people and inviting them to take part in it. Maybe we can get more ideas and projects through that.

直近の夢は鉄輪と掛け算する湯治を広げていきたい　Nearest dream is spreading Toji which mixed with Kannawa.

鉄輪とかけ算する湯治の世界を広げていきたいっていうのが直近の夢。湯治ぐらしに住む人たちも増やしていきたい。そうするとそれはそれだけ面白い人たちが増えるっていうことだし。可能性が増える。そういう人たちの居場所も作りたい。

静さんの湯治の定義は幅広いので、なんでも掛け算できそうだなと私（しほ）は感じた。

ちなみに、別府大学2年生の円城寺健悠さんとは、湯治と歴史を掛け算して、鉄輪の歴史や温泉の歴史を深堀して、その写真展示会を2020年の6月に鉄輪のチャレンジショップ「スクランブルベップ」で開催したそう。

My dearest dream is to spread the world of Toji mixed with Kannnawa. Also, I want more people to live in Toji-gurashi and it is equal that the number of interesting people will increase in Kannawa. Then we can gain more possibilities and I want to make the place for those people.

I (Shiho) thought that it can mix with a lot of things because Shizuka-san has a wide Toji’s definition.

To add this, ENJOZI Kenyu-san from 2 years in Beppu University held the photography exhibition in June

,2020 in the challenge shop in Kannawa “scramble-beppu”. He mixed Toji with the history of Kannawa and onsen.

ちなみに、鉄輪温泉はナトリウム・塩化物泉っていう泉質で、温泉に入ると塩のベールが肌の上にくっつくから、ラップを巻いたような感じになる。それが保温してくれる状態がずっと続くような泉質らしいですよ！
