Two big waves struck the band, and my misunderstanding
　バンドを襲った二つの大波、そして私の誤解　

　To tell you the truth, I had a feeling that the structure of the performance for the 2021 contest was not entirely polished or thought out, based on what the band has achieved so far. Of course, I don't mean to say that their performance was bad, I think they did a great job of getting it up there under various adverse conditions. It was amazing.
　　実を言うと私は、2021年のコンテスト用の演奏演技の構成は、それまでのバンドの実績からすれば、磨 (みが) かれきっていない、または考え抜かれていないと感じていました。もちろん、彼らのパフォーマンスが悪かったということではありません。様々な悪条件の中で、よくぞあそこまで創り上げたものだと思います。素晴らしかったです。

　What I did feel was that "compared to the band's previous works" the overall narrative of the program was a bit choppy, or not smooth enough.
　Then I interpreted the cause were mainly two, one was lack of club activity time due to the pandemic, in addition, the other was the fact that the band was in the trial-and-error stage of transition to its new regime.
　ただ、私が感じたのは、「以前のものと比較すれば」、プログラム全体の物語性が少しぎこちないというか、スムーズさに欠けるということでした。そしてその原因は主に二つあると解釈しました、一つは、パンデミックによって部活動の時間が不足したこと、加えて、もう一つは、バンドが新しい体制へ移行する試行錯誤の段階にあったこと、です。

　Either one of these, even only one, can have a major impact on bands. This is even more so in high school clubs, where each member leaves after a maximum of three years. Because, it is quite difficult to run them stably while maintaining their identity as one, for example, in terms of skill level, tone, characteristics, and so on.
　　それらは、どちらか一つだけであっても、バンドに大きな影響を与え得るものです。各メンバーが、最長でも三年で引退してしまう高校のクラブでは尚更 (なおさら) です。なぜなら、集団のアイデンティティーを一つに維持したまま安定的に運営するのは、かなり難しいからですーー例えば、技術レベル、音色、特質などの面において。

　It is also possible for a band to pass down its character and color to the next generation through its advisors instead of the students who are frequently replaced, but in this band, the teacher in charge of the club was switched in 2018, for the first time in more than 20 years.
　　頻繁に入れ替わってしまう生徒達の代わりに、指導者を通じてバンドの個性や特色を次世代に継承してゆくことも可能です。しかし、あのバンドでは、2018年に顧問の教諭の交代がありましたーーそれは20年以上ぶりのことでした。

　There should be no doubt that that was a historic change for the band. The retiring Mr. Tanaka was also the conductor of the band, and creator of the Tachibana Sound so to called which was incorporated the lilting beats of popular music or the intense syncopation of jazz to the one he had passed from the founder.
　　それが、バンドにとって歴史的な変化であったことは、疑う余地がないはずです。退任された田中先生は、バンドの指揮者でもあり、創設者から受け継いだサウンドにポピュラー音楽の軽快なビートやジャズの激しいシンコペーションを取り入れた、いわゆる “橘サウンド” の生みの親でもありました。

　And it was 2020, that is in the third year when the "big wave" had not yet subsided, the band was forced to began to restrict its activities due to a new virus outbreak.
　　そして、2020年、つまりまだその「大波」が収まりきっていない三年目に、バンドは新型ウイルスの突然の発生によって活動制限の開始を余儀なくされたのです。

　That restriction itself was enforced throughout Japan, so in that sense, the conditions may have been the same for all bands. However, for the band, the timing, the timing was relentless as if they had been hit by another new side wave when they were being shaken by the wave I have just described.
　　制限そのものは日本全国で実施されたことですから、その意味では、どのバンドも同じ条件だったかも知れません。 しかし、それはあのバンドにとっては、いま書いたような波に揺さぶられている最中に、さらに別の横波にまで襲われたかのような、容赦のないタイミングでの出来事でした。
