（Two big waves struck the band, and my misunderstanding
　バンドを襲った二つの大波、そして私の誤解　）

　The two big waves came at such times for the band. And the band, I believe, was also one of the bands most affected by the second wave. I mean, the encouragement to maintain social distancing and to wear masks, which was (and continues to be) implemented as an infection control measure, must have been especially serious for that band.
　　二つの大波は、バンドにとって、そのようなタイミングでやって来たものでした。そして、あのバンドは、第二の波の影響を最も受けたバンドの一つでもあったと私は思っています。どういうことかと言うと、感染症対策として実施された (そして現在も実施されている) ソーシャル・ディスタンスの保持とマスク着用の奨励が、あのバンドには特に深刻に影響したに違いないと考えています。

　Because, one reason is that, there are no people in the world who have mastered the art of dancing while playing like that, moreover in synch, except for the natives of the Kyoto Tachibana S.H.S. Band.
　　なぜなら、第一に、あのように演奏しながらダンスする、しかも同期して一斉に踊る、という技巧 (わざ) を身につけた人々はこの世界にいないからです、京都橘高校バンドの出身者 (native、ネイティブ) を除いて。

　There is no teacher to teach it, no book or video that explains how to learn it, anywhere, yes, nowhere in the world. In other words, there is no way for them to pass it on except by directly training up their juniors while they themselves are actually interacting with each other up close and personalーstep by step, from hand to hand.
　　それを教えてくれる先生はいません、それを解説してくれる書物も動画も存在しません、どこにも、そう、世界中のどこにも存在しません。言い換えれば、彼らがそれを伝えてゆく方法は、彼ら自身がお互いに間近で実際に触れ合いながら、後輩達を直接育て上げてゆく以外にないのです――一歩一歩、手から手へと。

　It is not something that can be taught online, through a camera or microphone, and it would be difficult to make progress even if they try. These are clearly and completely in conflict with social distancing.
　　オンラインで、カメラやマイクを通して教えられるようなものではありませんし、たとえ教えようとしたとしてもなかなか上達は難しいでしょう。こういったことは、ソーシャル・ディスタンスの保持とは明らかに、そして完全に相容れないものです。

　And that is not all.
　　しかも、それだけではありません。

　Another reason is that that performance style requires strong athletic ability, especially heart-lung function, and a great deal of oxygen breathing, which is unthinkable in normal music performance.
　　もう一つの理由は、あの演奏スタイルが、通常の音楽演奏では考えられないような強い運動能力、特に心肺機能を必要とし、大量の酸素呼吸を必要とするからです。

　In the first place, playing wind instrument and vigorous exercise are incompatible, and the most important reason for this is that the breathing required by the two is completely different. In other words, the breathing required by the former cannot provide the amount of oxygen needed by the latter, and the breathing required by the latter cannot play the music demanded by the former.
　　そもそも、吹奏楽器の演奏と激しい運動は相容れないものです。そしてその最大の理由は、両者が必要とする呼吸が全く異なるからです。 つまり、前者が必要とする呼吸では後者の必要とする量の酸素を供給できないし、後者が必要とする呼吸では前者の要求する音楽を奏でることができません。

　The two are different in quantity, in quality, in intensity, in timing, in rhythm, in short, in almost everything. Therefore, it is astonishing itself that the young people are able to achieve both, before we can say that they are doing a good job or a bad job.
　　両者は、量的にも、質的にも、強さも、タイミングも、リズムも、要するに、ほとんど何もかも異なります。したがって、彼らが上手であるとか下手であるとか言う以前に、そもそも、あの若者たちが二つのことを同時に実現していること自体が驚異的なことなのです。

　As I wrote in past review[*1], they must be near oxygen deprived at times during their performances. It is not surprising at all. Just think about it please, they are dancing and running, but they are limited both the quantity and timing of their breaths during those times.
　　過去のレビューでも書きましたが[*1]、彼らは演奏中に酸素欠乏に近い状態になることもあるはずです。それも当然と言えば当然です。考えてみてください、彼らは踊ったり走ったりしているにもかかわらず、パフォーマンスの間ずっと、呼吸の量もタイミングも制限され続けているのです。

　That is why, I have to say It would be extremely difficult and even dangerous for their health to practice such a performance while wearing a fine-mesh mask to prevent infection, for it disturb your breathing either.
　　だからこそ、感染症の予防のために目の細かいマスクをした状態で練習するのは非常に難しいし、彼らの健康にとって危険でさえあると言わざるを得ません、呼吸の妨げになってしまうからです。

　Some of our YouTube community readers would remember an episode which I mentioned in an article last year. It was about a first-year student who suffered a leg pain during the parade, and after the show was over, went to the hospital for a checkup, where she was found to have broken her leg[*2].　
　　ユーチューブのコミュニティの読者の中には、私が昨年記事の中で紹介したエピソードを覚えている方もおられるでしょう。それは、パレードの際に足を痛めた一年生の話ですが、彼女は終演後に病院へ行って診察を受けたところ、骨折していることが判明したというものです[*2]。

　　It is of course correct in one sense that they seem to be smiling and playing happily, but it is not correct in another sense. They should always be struggling to control their bodies into a state of harsh and delicate balance in order to simultaneously play the contradictory roles of player and dancer(or rather an athlete) in one body. Plus even with their still-growing, ever-changing, unstable bodies.
　　彼らが笑顔を浮かべながら楽しそうに演奏しているように見えるのは、もちろん、ある意味では正しいのですが、しかし、別の意味では正しくありません。彼らは演奏者とダンサー (というよりむしろアスリート) という相反する役割を一つの身体で同時にこなすために、自分達の肉体を、過酷かつ繊細なバランスの範囲内にコントロールすべく苦闘し続けているはずです。しかも、まだ成長途中の、変化し続ける不安定な身体で。

　For them, as such, only one mask is possibly a far more significant barrier than we can imagine.
　　そのような彼らにとっては、たった一枚のマスクが、私達が想像し得るより遥かに重大な障壁になる可能性があるのです。
