次男は、足に矯正器具をつけている。

足首が内側に倒れてしまうのを防ぐ為である。

本人は、足首が内側に倒れることについて、痛さを感じていないようなのだが、この先進行してしまうと、痛みが出ることも予想されるため、これ以上内側に倒れないようにと矯正器具が装着されている。

この関係から、足首を伸ばすという行為が出来ない/できにくい作りとなっているため、靴を履かせるのがちょっと苦労する。

それでも、靴の場合足首を伸ばさなくても靴つま先部分を持ち上げることで、それほど苦も無く履くことが出来る。

しかし、問題は冬用のブーツである。

-20度が当たり前のカナダ、カルガリー。

寒い時には、普通の靴ではなく、足首まで隠れるウォンターブーツが必要となる。

これまでは、SORELというカナダでは有名なメーカーのブーツを使用していた。

足首部分の素材が柔らかく、足首の上にあるマジックテープのベルトを外すことで、足首より上の部分が大きく口を開き、運動靴のように履くことができる。

これを愛用していたが、子供が大きくなるにつれ、このタイプのウィンターブーツは、アメリカでいう子供サイズ13、日本でいう18センチくらいまで。それ以上のサイズUSでいうYOUTH1以上のサイズのウィンターブーツには、今まで使っていたような機能が備わっていない。

色々と調べると、大人サイズのウィンターブーツで、車いすなどを必要とする方々の為の、開口部を大きく開けることが出来る、アダプティブ　ウィンターブーツの販売が昨年より始まったとの記事の掲載を発見した。

トドラーや子供サイズがあり、大人用があるのであれば、YOUTHサイズがあってもおかしくないと思い、SORELへ電話をしたものの、残念ながらYOUTHサイズでアダプティブ　ウィンターブーツの取り扱いは無いとのこと。

小さいサイズと大人用サイズはあって、YOUTHが無いのはおかしいのではないか。とのこちらの主張に、係員も納得をしていたようだ。

関係各所へ伝達をするとの説明を受けたが、いつYOUTHサイズの開口部を広くしたウィンターブーツが出来るのかは全く予想がつかない状況。

根気よくネットで矯正器具を付けた人用のウィンターブーツを探していると、見事に一つヒットした。

メーカーのサイトではなく、開口部の広い靴を多く取り扱っている販売会社のサイトである。

そこでみつけたBILLYというメーカーのウィンターブーツ。もちろんスニーカータイプなど様々なタイプの靴を取り扱っており、ジッパーで足の甲あたりまで開閉が出来るタイプで、実物は見ていないものの、写真から理解するに、次男が自分で脱いだり履いたり出来るタイプであるということが理解できた。

顧客のレビューを見ると、次男と同じような矯正器具を使用している子友達が、自分で脱いだり履いたり出来るという記載を見つけられた。

確かに、矯正器具を取り付けたまま靴やブーツを利用する人の割合はとっても少ないのかもしれません。なので、ネットでなかなか見つけられないのかもしれませんが、矯正器具を付けた人用のブーツなどを紹介しているブログや記事を読んでも、このBILLYというメーカーについて触れているものは一切なく、大手メーカーの紹介ばかりで、必要な情報は得られなかった。

どのブログを読んでも、記事を読んでも、同じようなメーカーの紹介ばかりで、全てと言っても良いそれらのサイトで紹介されているメーカーに問い合わせをしたけれど、次男のような足首を伸ばすことが出来ない器具を装着している人が、脱いだり履いたりしやすいウィンターブーツは一切見つけることが出来ませんでした。

およそ、半年にわたり色々な言葉を入れて検索をしてきて、ようやくBILLYを取り扱う販売店のサイトに出会い、BILLYというメーカーの存在を知ることとなりました。

カナダでは、様々な情報が、医療機関などを含めて必要とされる人に届けられる仕組みが出来上がっていると感じてきましたが、全てではないのだということも痛感しました。

障害児である次男と歩むことで、見えてきたまだまだ足りない情報だったり、障害をもった人であっても、健常者と同じようにファッションを楽しむという喜びを感じることであったり。

昨今、LGBTやらなにやらで、皆の平等が・・・と言われていますが、もっともっと以前よりある障害を持った人達に対する、間口の狭い世間の問題にも取り組む必要があるのではないかとも感じたりもします。

This is to prevent his ankle from falling inward.

He does not seem to feel any pain when his ankle falls inward tomorrow, but if the condition progresses, he may experience pain.

Because of this, it is a little difficult to put on the shoes because the ankle is made in such a way that it is impossible or difficult to extend the ankle.

However, in the case of shoes, it is possible to put them on without much difficulty by lifting the toes of the shoes without stretching the ankles.

The problem, however, is winter boots.

When it is cold, we need not ordinary shoes but winter boots that cover our ankles.

Until now, I have been using boots made by SOREL, a well-known manufacturer in Canada.

The material of the ankle part is soft, and by removing the Velcro belt above the ankle, the part above the ankle opens its mouth wide and can be worn like athletic shoes.

I used to love these, but as my children grew older, this type of winter boots were limited to a child's size 13 in the U.S., or about 18 cm in Japan. Winter boots above that size, YOUTH 1 in the US, do not have the same features that I used to use.

After much research, I found an article that said that adaptive winter boots, which have a wide opening for those who need a wheelchair, were introduced last year in adult size winter boots.

I called SOREL, thinking that if there are toddler and children's sizes and adult sizes, it would not be surprising if there were YOUTH sizes, but unfortunately, they do not carry adaptive winter boots in YOUTH sizes.

I called SOREL, but unfortunately, they said that they do not carry adaptive winter boots in the YOUTH size. The staff seemed to agree with our argument that it is strange that there are small and adult sizes but not YOUTH.

The staff explained that they would inform the relevant authorities, but they had no idea when a winter boot with a wider opening in the "YOUTH" size would be available.

After patiently searching the Internet for winter boots for people with orthotics, I came across one brilliant hit.

It was not a manufacturer's website, but a website of a company that sells many shoes with wide openings.

I found a pair of winter boots made by a company called BILLY. Of course, they carry various types of shoes, including sneakers, and they are the type that can be opened and closed at the top of the foot with a zipper.

In looking at customer reviews, we found that friends of ours who use similar orthotics to our son's can take them on and off on their own.

It is true that the percentage of people who use shoes or boots with orthotics attached may be very small. So maybe it is not so easy to find them on the Internet, but when I read blogs and articles introducing boots and other products for people with orthotics, none of them mentioned this manufacturer BILLY, and they only introduced major manufacturers, so I could not get the information I needed.

No matter which blog or article I read, all I read were references to the same manufacturer, and although I contacted the manufacturers mentioned on those sites, which is to say all of them, I could not find any winter boots that were easy to take off and put on for someone like my second son, who wears equipment that does not allow him to extend his ankles.
