I read Akira's work about multilingual countries. Since then, it has been on my mind all the time. Then, suddenly, what I had experienced in Europe came to my mind. When I was in Europe, they were nothing special to me. But when I came back to my island nation, Japan, I found that they were special and precious to me. In Japan, I could not experience them even if I wanted to.
I have been to several multilingual countries in Europe. Some of them are Belgium and Switzerland. Belgium has a French-speaking part and a Dutch-speaking part. The former is close to France and has Brussels, the capital of the country. The latter is close to the Netherlands and has Antwerp. Antwerp is the biggest city in the part and is famous for diamonds. In everyday life, people in the first part speak French, and people in the second part speak Dutch. But they have no problem communicating with each other. They communicate with each other in French or Dutch. I have also seen them change their language while talking. First, they were talking in Dutch, but suddenly, they began to talk in French. They used French and Dutch like we use dialects in Japan.
This is true with Switzerland. The country consists of three parts: the German-speaking part around Zurich, the French-speaking part around Geneva, and the Italian-speaking part around Lugano. However, people in the country have no problem communicating with people who speak other languages. Most Swiss people speak at least two languages: German and French or French and Italian. Depending on the situation, they communicate in one of these languages.

欧州にも多言語国家がいつかあります。それが、ベルギーとスイスです。ベルギーはフランス語を話す地域とオランダ語を話す地域に分かれています。フランス語圏は、フランスに近い地域で、首都のブリュッセルがあります。オランダ語圏はオランダに隣接する地域です。この地域の最大の街はダイアモンドでも有名なアントワープです。日常生活では、フランス語圏の人はフランス語を話し、オランダ語圏の人はオランダ語を話します。でも、フランス語圏の人とオランダ語圏の人が会話するのはまったく問題ありません。話すときは、フランス語かオランダ語で話します。でも、会話の途中で、言語を変えて話す場面も見たことがあります。最初はオランダ語で話していたと思ったら、突然、フランス語で会話し始めたのです。彼らは、日本人が方言を使いこなすように、フランス語とオランダを使いこなしていました。
スイスでも同じです。スイスは３つの地域に分かれます。チューリッヒ周辺のドイツ語圏、ジュネーブ周辺のフランス語圏とルガノ周辺のイタリア語圏です。でも、スイスの人は、違う言語を話す人と会話するのに、なんの問題もありません。スイスの人は、少なくとも２か国語が話せます。ドイツ語とフランス語かフランス語とイタリア語です。彼らは、状況に応じて、いずれかの言語で会話をしていました。
