Just as my wife has recently learnt that the currency sign for the Japanese yen is used for the Chinese yuan, I also had something new to learn about a currency about ten years ago. It was about the pound. At that time, I convinced myself that no country other than the UK used the pound as its currency. But it was wrong. I found out that Egypt used the pound as its currency. When I was paying for what I had bought in a shop in Cairo, I was told by the shop master that the total was something in pounds. At that moment, I could not believe my ears and thought that I had misheard. So I asked him to say it again. He repeated the same thing. Then, I realised that Egypt uses the pound as its currency. After that, I found that it is called the Egyptian pound and uses the same sign as the British pound. I also knew that the pound was used in other countries such as Lebanon, Syria and Sudan.
The same is true for other currencies. One of them is the lira. Until about ten years ago, I had convinced myself that the lira was only used in Italy. But I noticed that it was also used in Turkey. The Italian lira has now been replaced by the euro, but the Turkish lira is still in use.
In any case, each currency with the same name is not equal in value to other currencies with the same name. In other words, each has its own value. So we have to compare each value using the exchange rates. For instance, one British pound is now about 170 yen while one Egyptian pound is about 5 yen. This means that one British pound is about 34 Egyptian pounds.

　妻が、日本円の通貨記号は中国元でも使われていることを最近知ったように、ボクも、10年前にある通貨について新しく学んだことがありました。それは、ポンドについてです。ポンドといえば英国の通貨で、英国以外に使っている国はないと思い込んでした。ところが、これが間違いでした。エジプトにいった時、この国の通貨もポンドだということを知ったのです。店で買い物をして支払いをするときに、店主に「xxポンド」と言われたときに、一瞬耳を疑いました。聞き間違いをしたと思ったので、店主にもう一度確認しました。そしたら、店主は同じことを繰り返したのです。その時に、エジプトの通貨も「ポンド」なのだと知ったのです。後で調べたら、通貨記号も英国と同じ「￡」でした。また、ポンドを使っている国が他にもありました。レバノン、シリアとスーダンです。
　同じことは他の通貨でも言えます。その一つが、リラです。10年くらい前までは、リラはイタリアだけと思っていたのですが、トルコでも使われているのを知ったのです。イタリアのリラはユーロに変わりましたが、トルコリラはいまでも使われています。
　いずれにしても、同じ名前の各国通貨は等価ではありません。したがって、為替レートを使って比較する必要があります。例えば、英国ポンドは、今、170円くらいです。一方、エジプト・ポンドは5円くらいなので、1英国ポンドは3４エジプト・ポンドぐらいです。
