The other day my wife met her daughter and son-in-law in the centre of Tokyo. It had been two months since the couple had come to my home for a New Year's holiday. The three of them did what they had to do in the morning and went for lunch to a Japanese tofu restaurant in Ningyo-cho. It was a small, family-run restaurant where they were served by the family's child. But the food was delicious, though not in keeping with the restaurant's atmosphere. All three of them enjoyed it very much.
After lunch, my wife went to the couple's flat. It was her first visit since my daughter got married. The couple seemed to be getting on well while they were busy with business.
On that day, I was free and had nothing special to do. So if invited, I was ready to join them, but did not. Instead, I was told by my wife on the day before not to come together. She said to me that if I had joined them, my son-in-law would have been tired of looking after me. So I was reluctant to give up meeting the couple and had a lonely day.
In any case, I was very happy to find the couple doing well.

　　先日、妻が都内で娘夫婦に会いました。正月にあって以来なので、２か月ぶりです。午前中に３人で用事を済ませた後、人形町の豆腐料理店でお昼をしたそうです。子供さんも接客する家族経営の店だったのですが、味はすごくおいしく、料理を満喫したようです。
　その後、妻は娘夫婦の家に行ったそうです。家にお邪魔するのは初めてでした。1時間ほどいたようです。その間、娘夫婦から近況を聞いたようです。二人とも仕事は忙しいようですが、夫婦仲良く暮らしているようです。
　この日はボクも特別やることもなく、暇でした。なので、誘われれば、ついていったのですが、行きませんでした。妻から、ボクが一緒に行くと、娘の旦那さんが気を使うから来ないほうがいいと釘を刺されたのです。そこで、仕方なく、行くのをあきらめ、寂しく過ごしました。
　何はともあれ、妻から、娘夫婦が元気にしていると聞ければボクは十分です。
