The other day, I was captured by a painting on TV. That was the one with the title Sankai Zue by Fsentetsu, a Japanese painter. I am out of my depth in paintings and do not know about him and other paintings of his before running into the painting. But it fascinated me the moment I saw it. I do not know why. But it seemed to have something special which fascinated me so much. First of all, I loved the colours of the painting. In particular, I liked the dried grass colour on it, which got me to settle down. I also liked the composition of the painting. Mt. Fuji gets a birds-eye view of its surroundings area, as if it were a human being.
Seeing from the Shizuoka side, Mount Fuji has a beautiful face with long, gentle and symmetrical ridges. But in the painting, it looks more awe-inspiring than beautiful. It is entirely covered with white snow. And it has the clouds below the summit, as if they were its followers. The mountain, probably, should have been a god to Senetesu.
He has a lot of other paintings with the same colours as the Sankai Zue, and the exhibition of his paintings is being held in Nara. I will definitely visit it if it is held around the Tokyo area. He is the first Japanese painter to fascinate me so much.

　先日、テレビで見た絵に釘付けになりました。 不染鉄の「山海図絵」です。ボクは、絵画についてはあまり詳しくないので、この絵に出会うまではこの画家さんや彼の作品について知りませんでした。 でも、見た瞬間に魅了されました。 理由は分かりません。 でも、魅了される何か特別なものを持っているようです。 まず絵の色合いがとても気に入りました。 特に枯れ草の色が気に入りました。この色を見るとすごく落ち着きました。 構図も好きです。 まるで富士山が、人間のように、周囲を俯瞰しているように見えました。
　静岡側から見る富士山は、左右対称の長くなだらかな尾根を持ち、美しい顔をしています。 しかし、絵の富士山は、美しいというよりも恐れ多い感じがします。 一面真っ白な雪で覆われ、横には、従者のように雲を従えています。 不染鉄にとって、たぶん、富士山は神のように見えたのでしょう。
不染鉄は、山海図絵以外にも、同じ色彩の絵をたくさん描いています。そして、今、奈良で彼の作品の展示会が開催されています。 東京近辺で開催されたら、ぜひ行ってみたいと思います。 これほどまでにボクを魅了した日本人画家は彼が初めてです。
