‘We learn from history that we do not learn from history.’ This is what the German philosopher Wilhelm Hegel said in his book. It came to mind when I saw the news on the war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas. It has just broken out in the Middle East. But it is not the first war between these parties. They have been repeating the war many times for a long time. In my memory, it was the fiercest and cruellest in the 1970s. It lost the lives of a lot of civilians and put them into poverty.
The parties must have learned from the past how tragic and catastrophic it was. They must also have been learning it from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But they have just started it again. What they are doing in the Middle East is the exact copy of what they did in the 1970s. They learned nothing from their history.
The world has seen a lot of changes over the last four decades, and world leaders have met face to face more than ever to discuss a lot of world issues. But they have done nothing about this conflict as if it had been a thing of the past. What are they going to do with it?

　「歴史から学ぶことができるただ一つのことは、人間は歴史から何も学ばないということだ。」これは、ドイツの哲学者・ヘーゲルの言葉です。イスラエルとパレスチナのハマスとの戦争のニュースを聞いたときに、この言葉が思い浮かびました。中東でこの戦争が勃発しました。でも、これは、両者の最初の戦争ではありません。彼らは長年に渡って何度も繰り返してきました。ボクの記憶では、1970年代が一番激しく、悲惨でした。多くの民間人が犠牲になり、貧困に追い込まれました。
　彼らは、過去から戦争がいかに悲劇的で悲惨なもであるということを学んでいるはずです。また、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻からもそれを学んでいるはずです。にも拘わらず、また、戦争をはじめてしまいました。中東で今起こっていることは、まさに、1970年代に起こったことのコピーです。彼らは、歴史からなにも学んでいません。
　世界はこの40年で大きく変わりました。世界のリーダーは、かつてないほど、対面で世界の問題を議論しています。でも、イスラエルとパレスチナの問題は、過去の遺物であるかのように、彼らは何もしてきませんでした。どうするつもりなのでしょうか？
