It has been a few years since my town opened an electronic library. I had not used it until a week ago, because at the beginning it had no books I wanted to borrow. But for some reason, I was tempted to give it a try a week ago and went in. But nothing has changed since the beginning, and it has disappointed me again. It had few books I would like to borrow. It still has few popular books or magazines and has seemed to be little used by the residents. It is a very waste of talent.
The e-library, in itself, is a good idea, and I have nothing against it. It helps me to save time to borrow books. I do not have to go to the library to borrow and return books, as I do now on foot. The town can also save a lot of things with the e-library: e.g. it can reduce the number and space of its libraries. And it is one of the e-libraries that are still only available in about 500 towns in Japan. I strongly expect it to increase the number of books as much as possible and make it more useful for the users.
But I assume that the town must be faced with some hurdles and pressure to increase the number of books. Among them is the pressure from publishers not to increase the number, which must be the biggest. I have heard that the publishers are not cooperative with public libraries to increase the number of books. They are afraid that the more the libraries increase that number, the more they may lose their sales to readers. I do not know if it is a true story, but it is not strange that it is true. It is one of the stories which is everywhere.
Books and reading have been thought to be one of the most valuable and priceless assets. But in fact, even it seems to have the face of business and is involved in a business confrontation.

　ボクの住む町に電子図書館ができて数年になります。当初は借りたい本がほとんどありませんでした。そのため、1週間前までは利用していませんでした。でも、１週間前にふと試してみたくなり、行ってみました。でも、最初の頃と何も変わっておらず、またがっかりさせられました。借りたい本がほとんどなかったのです。人気のある本や雑誌もまだ少なく、住民にほとんど利用されていないようでした。まさに、宝の持ち腐れです。
　電子図書館自体はいいアイデアだし、反対はしません。本を借りる時間も節約できます。本を借りたり返したりするために、今のように図書館まで歩いて行く必要がなくなります。また、町も電子図書館でたくさんのことを節約できます。例えば、図書館の数やスペースを減らすことができます。しかも、この電子図書館は、日本ではまだ500くらいの町にしかないもののひとつなのです。少しでも蔵書を増やし、利用者にとってより便利なものになってもらいたいものです。
　でも、蔵書を増やすには、それなりのハードルや圧力があるようです。なかでも出版社からの「蔵書を増やすな」という圧力が一番大きいのでしょう。出版社は公共の図書館が蔵書を増やすことに協力的ではないと聞いたことがあります。図書館が蔵書を増やせば増やすほど、読者への売り上げが減ることを恐れているためです。本当の話かどうかは知りませんが、事実であってもおかしくはありません。どこにでもある話の一つです。
本や読書は、最も貴重でかけがえのない財産のひとつだと考えられてきました。でも、実は、本でさえビジネスの側面があり、商売上の対立に巻き込まれています。
