I see a lot of words that have different meanings depending on where they are used. Among them is 'cashback', which I will never forget in my life. In Japan, cashback means something like a refund. In other words, it is part of what has been paid for a product or service which is given back to you subject to meeting certain conditions. For example, if you buy a product during a sales promotion and meet the conditions of the promotion, you will get back part of what you have paid. The part is the cashback.
But the word was used with a different meaning in the UK. It was about twenty years ago. Usually, we have to go to a bank or use an ATM to take cash from our accounts. But in the UK, we did not have to do so. Instead, we were allowed to take cash from a supermarket, and that was called ‘cashback’. When we said "£100 cashback please" to a cashier and handed over a bank card, the cashier gave us the cash.
I never knew or imagined that the word was used in this way until I began to live in the UK.

　場所によってまったく違う意味で使われる言葉がたくさんあります。その一つが、「キャッシュバック」です。この言葉だけは、忘れられません。日本では、キャッシュバックは返金のような意味で使われています。つまり、一定の条件を満たすと、支払った金額の一部が戻ってくることを言います。例えば、キャンペーン期間中に商品やサービスを購入し、かつキャンペーンの条件を満たすと、支払った金額の一部が返金されることがあります。これが、「キャッシュバック」です。
　でも、英国では全く違う意味で使われていました。もう20年も前の話しです。自分の銀行口座から現金を引き出すには、銀行に行くかATMを利用するのが普通ですが、英国ではそんな必要がありませんでした。スーパーマーケットで現金を引き出せたのです。これを、英国では「キャッシュバック」と読んでいました。スーパーのレジ係の人に、「100ポンドのキャッシュバックをお願い」といって銀行のカードを渡すと、現金で100ポンドを出してくれました。英国にすみ始めるまで、この言葉がこんな使われ方をしているとは知りもしないし、想像だにしていませんでした。
