「銅版画を始めたきっかけは？」と時々聞かれる。
　私は「ミーハーなんですけど…」と話を始める。

1998年の夏、5年ほど勤めていた派遣先から一緒に入った派遣社員十数人一斉に契約更新なしが告げられた。
すぐ次の話が来るだろうと呑気にしていたら、来ない。

あら…
困ったね。。。

そんなある日コンビニの本コーナーである特集記事が目に留まった。
手に取ったのは「COSMOPOLITAN」コスモポリタンという雑誌。
表紙には『パリに暮らす』という特集だ。

パリかぁ。住んでみたかったなぁ。。。

中を開くとそこには、色んなことを習得しながらパリで暮らしている日本人が紹介されていた。

写真かぁ…
帽子ねぇ…
フランス語…　30過ぎて語学習得もねぇ…
料理学校…高っ
銅版画…？？

初めて見たかもしれない銅版画がそこにあった。
フランス語を学びながら銅版画のアトリエに通い制作されているイラストレーターの方の軽やかで素敵な銅版画だった。

記事の中に青山のシューズショップのDMに採用されたり仕事にもなっているとのことも。

それいいなぁ。。。
仕事もないし。。。
行けってこと。。。!?

もうひとつ背中を押したのは授業料。
当時１ヶ月1000フラン、約２万円。
これならイケるかも。
（余談：以前大学生と話していたら「フランだったんですか～!?」と驚かれたことに驚いた。そうかきっと、1ドル360円の時ですか～!?みたいな感覚なんだろう…。）

立ち読みしていたその雑誌を買って帰り、アトリエのディレクターの奥様が日本人と書かれていたので、フランス語が儘ならない私は奥様宛てに、そちらで学んでみたいがどのようにしたらよいかという内容の手紙を出した。
　
返信はすぐには来なかったが、もうその気になっていたので返信が来なくても4月から3ヶ月程行ってみようと思い、その準備を始めた。
とりあえず夜のバイトを始めたが、不思議なものですぐに派遣の仕事も来て4月までものを選び、昼夜と働いた。

そうこうしてるうちにアトリエの奥様から手紙の返信が届いた。
「日本に帰省していてお返事遅くなってごめんなさい。必要なものは…（略）」

こんなミーハーな感じで始まった銅版画人生。

あれから22年。

「パリに住んでみたかった＋ちょっと銅版画が気になった」であります。
