ビオラ トリコロール ホルテンシス
（VIOLA TRICOLOR HORTENSIS）

スミレ科、スミレ属、パンジー種
一般に寒い時期にも花壇などに植えられて
華やかな彩りを楽しむ一年生植物である。

パンジーは、英国の園芸愛好家達によって
自然界の様々な品種を収集しては、それらを
掛け合わせて作られた園芸品種の植物となる。

日本には江戸末期には上陸しており、当時は
『人面草』と呼ばれて人気を博したのである。
日本もだが海外も『人面ウンチャラ』などが
人気を呼ぶ、そんな時代だったのだろう。

パンジーの語源は、フランス語の『パンセ』
これの意味は『考える人』で、花に浮かんだ
暗色の模様が、人が思案にふけている顔にも
見えると、この名称がついている。

時代の流れと共に、この『考える人』柄より
穏やかなデザインのものの方が主流となって
いる様である。また、パンジーはその花寸が
４０ｍｍ以上のものと定義されているのだが
それよりも小さい花を咲かせるビオラ品種が
主流となっている。

コンパクトで、多彩な色や模様の入り方など
目にも楽しいからである。

それでもこうしてロールシャッハ柄の様な
人面柄の入った花を見ると懐かしくもホッと
する私なのである。

VIOLA TRICOLOR HORTENSIS

Violet family, Viola genus, Pansy species. Generally planted in flower beds even during cold seasons to enjoy vibrant colors, this annual plant. Pansies, created by British horticulturists collecting various varieties from nature and crossbreeding them, became cultivated horticultural species.

Introduced to Japan in the late Edo period, it gained popularity under the name "Human Face Grass." During that time, both in Japan and abroad, characters like "Human Face Unciala" were trendy, reflecting the spirit of the era.

The origin of "Pansy" is the French word "pensée," meaning "thoughtful person." The dark patterns on the flower, resembling a contemplative face, inspired this name. Over time, designs with a gentle demeanor seem to have become more prevalent.

While Pansies are defined as having flower diameters of 40mm or more, Viola varieties producing smaller flowers have become dominant. Their compact size, diverse colors, and patterns make them visually delightful.

Yet, seeing flowers with face-like patterns, reminiscent of a Rorschach test, brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort to me.
