旅人ノ木 （タビビトノキ）


ショウガ目、ゴクラクチョウカ科、
タビビトノキ属、タビビトノキ種


成長すると、その樹高は１０〜１５m迄に
なるものであり、ゴクラクチョウカの仲間
で、ストレリツィアの科目に分類される。


マダガスカル原産の植物で花の後に出来た
その実が弾けると、中からは真っ青な種が
顔を覗かせる。その青があまりにも綺麗で
宝石の様にも見える事からインテリア用に
この種は販売されている。

Traveler's Tree (Tabibito no ki)


It belongs to the order Zingiberales, family Strelitziaceae, genus Ravenala, and species Ravenala madagascariensis.


When mature, it reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters, belonging to the Strelitziaceae family and classified under the order Zingiberales.


Originating from Madagascar, this plant produces fruits that burst open after flowering, revealing bright blue seeds inside. The striking blue color resembles gemstones, making these seeds popular for interior decoration.

日本いけばな芸術展の中で、この作品を
出展されていたのは、『草月流』の3名の方
による合作となる。前面には白い胡蝶蘭が
並び、その背後には大きな枯れ木が置かれ
全体の構図もよく、青い種がとても印象的な
作品となる。

At the Japanese Ikebana Art Exhibition, this piece was exhibited as a collaboration by three individuals from the "Kusatsuki School." In the foreground, white moth orchids are arranged, with a large dead tree placed behind them. The overall composition is excellent, and the blue seeds make the piece very impressive.

この青に魅せられるのは人間だけではなく
マダガスカル棲息の、エリマキキツネザル
も、この青い種を見つけては食べる。


タビビトノキと、エリマキキツネザルとは
共生関係にあって、この猿は実を食用活用
するが、この植物の受粉媒介者の役割をも
担っているものである。

Not only humans are captivated by this blue, but also the ring-tailed lemurs inhabiting Madagascar. They find and eat these blue seeds.


The Traveler's Tree and ring-tailed lemurs have a symbiotic relationship. While the lemurs consume the fruit, they also play a role as pollinators for this plant.

この植物にはもうひとつ面白い側面を持つ。
和名に『旅人ノ木』（タビビトノキ）と付き
また、洋名でも『トラベラーズツリー』や
『トラベラーパイン』の名がついている。


その理由のひとつが、旅人には大切な水を
この植物が提供してくれる事。その葉柄の
形が水桶の様に窪んでいて、そこには水が
貯まる構造になっており、旅人にとっての
水補給ができる有難い植物なのである。


旅人にとって、もうひとつの大切なものは
方角を知る事である。この植物は太陽光を
効率よく受けるために南に向けて葉を扇状
に広げる。これが真南を向くので、扇葉の
左右は、東西を正確に示してくれる事から
旅人は自分の進むべき道をこの植物により
教えられるという訳である。


ウォーター＆コンパス、これがトラベラー
を手助けするこの植物の特性となる。


これは各地の植物園にあるが、他のものや
温室の屋根が写真画像に映り込むのが嫌い
なので、その写真を私が掲載する事はない。


沖縄にはこれが植っているとの事なので
ロケーションの良いものなら撮影して記事
にしたいと思っている。

This plant has another interesting aspect to it. It's known as "Tabibito no ki" (Traveler's Tree) in Japanese, and in Western names, it's also called "Traveler's Tree" or "Traveler Pine."


One reason for this is that it provides essential water to travelers. The shape of its leaf stalk is hollowed out like a water bucket, creating a structure where water accumulates, making it a grateful plant for travelers to replenish their water supply.


Another important thing for travelers is knowing the direction. This plant fans its leaves towards the south to efficiently receive sunlight. Since this indicates true south, the orientation of the fan leaves accurately shows east and west, allowing travelers to be guided by this plant on their path.


Water and compass, this becomes the characteristic of this plant that assists travelers.


While it can be found in botanical gardens around the world, I prefer not to publish photos where other elements such as buildings or greenhouse roofs are reflected. However, since it's said to be planted in Okinawa, I would like to photograph and feature it in an article if I find one in a suitable location.
