老鴉柿 （ロウヤガキ）

カキノキ目、カキノキ科、カキノキ属、
つまりは柿である。

中国を原産とする小型の実がつく柿で
日本へは京都の植物園園長が日本へと
持ち帰ったもの。

その実は小さく、うずらの卵大のものだが
残念ながら可食に適さないものである。
そんな食べられもしない柿ではあるのだが
生花、盆栽、庭木にも人気がある小低木。

柿の蔕（ヘタ）の部分がとても大きい事から
正月遊びの羽子板でカンカンと突きあい遊ぶ
衝羽根に似ていて、衝羽根柿 （ツクバネガキ）
の名前もある。

タイトルの老鴉柿 （ロウヤガキ）であるが
冬になっても黒くなった実がぶらさがる姿を
老いた鴉（カラス）に見立てついた名である。
落葉樹なので葉が落ちた後にぶら下がる柿の
姿に、侘び寂びを感じるものである。

ROUYA GAKI

Persimmon Tree Order, Persimmon Family, Persimmon Genus – in other words, it's a persimmon.

This small-fruited persimmon, originally from China, was brought to Japan by the director of the Kyoto Botanical Garden. Although its fruits are small, about the size of quail eggs, unfortunately, they are not suitable for consumption. Despite being inedible, this persimmon is a popular small shrub for Ikebana (flower arrangement), bonsai, and garden landscaping.

Due to the large size of the persimmon's calyx (Heta), it is also known as "Tsukubanegaki," resembling the battledore used in New Year's games where people strike each other's battledores. The title "老鴉柿" (Rouyagaki) translates to "Old Crow Persimmon," a name that associates the blackened fruits hanging in winter with an aged crow. As a deciduous tree, the sight of persimmons hanging after the leaves have fallen evokes a sense of wabi-sabi, simplicity and tranquility.
