浦島草 （ウラシマソウ）


天南星（テンナンショウ）の一味のひとつ。


キノコバエを受粉協力者とする為に、この虫
の好物のキノコの匂いを漂わせて花の中へと
誘い込んで受粉を手伝わせる。キノコバエは
その魅惑の匂いに騙されて受粉のお手伝いを
させられる割に、餌も何も与えられず協力損
の役回りである。この天南星グループは雌雄
異株であり、雄花の方は抜穴がある為に脱出
可能であるが、雌花には抜穴は設けられずに
この中に侵入したキノコバエは、死の宣告を
受ける事となる。


そんな天南星は、とってもその種類に個性的
な顔が揃っていて、中々面白い。ヒーロー者
の悪者に色んな個性派が揃うのと、同じ位に
見ていて楽しいもの達である。


今回のウラシマソウの持つ個性は、５０cm
以上にも及んだ長い釣竿の様な付属物が花の
部分の開口部から突き出ているものとなる。
この部分からキノコの様な匂いを漂わせては
キノコバエをこの花の深部へと誘い込む訳で
その外観の面白さで人気が高い。


この釣糸みたいな突起物を浦島太郎が釣りを
している様子に見立てた事から『浦島草』の
名前が付けられたものである。


他の天南星同様に、誘い込んで受粉協力者に
何も与えない、まさに釣った魚に餌を与えぬ
の言葉そのままの植物である。ちなみにこの
釣糸をちょん切って仕舞うと、花の中へ誘引
されるキノコバエも激減してしまう事が確認
されている。


誘われた先のこの植物の中は竜宮城とは違い
まかないもおもてなしもない、地獄の三丁目
なのである。


これらのグループの植物は、虫の恩恵を仇で
返す特性を持ったものではあるのだが、その
属性の元である『天南星』（テンナンショウ）
の名はとても美しい響きがある。中国由来の
名前であるが、これらに分類するグループが
葉を天に向け南の方角へ拡げる姿が、天界の
満天の星を受け止めようとする姿に見える事
に由来する。


この植物はその仏炎苞の花姿、花が終わった
葉姿、そして虫の命と引き換えにして連なる
実の姿すらも美しい、季節ごとに鑑賞価値の
違う美を持つものである。

Urashima Sō


This plant emits the scent of mushrooms, the favorite food of fungus gnats, to lure them into the flowers for pollination. Although the fungus gnats are tempted by this enticing scent and coerced into assisting with pollination without being provided any food, they end up playing a role detrimental to their cooperation. The Urashima Sō plant is dioecious, with male flowers having an escape hole for the fungus gnats to leave, while female flowers lack such an opening. Fungus gnats entering these female flowers face a death sentence.


These Urashima Sō plants each have unique and interesting features, which highlight their individual personalities, making them quite entertaining. They are like a group of heroes and villains with various personalities, equally enjoyable to observe.


A distinctive feature of the Urashima Sō is the long rod-like protrusion extending from the opening of the flower. This part emits a mushroom-like odor to attract fungus gnats deep into the flower, making it popular for its intriguing appearance.


The name "Urashima Sō" comes from the resemblance of this fishing rod-like protrusion to the fishing of Urashima Taro, a legendary tale in Japan.


Like other Urashima Sō plants, this one also encourages pollination without providing any reward. Incidentally, it has been confirmed that cutting off this "fishing line" significantly reduces the number of fungus gnats attracted into the flower.


Unlike the Dragon Palace, where visitors are treated with hospitality, the inside of this plant's flower is like the hellish Third District, offering neither food nor hospitality to its visitors.


While these plants exhibit characteristics of returning the favor of insects with hostility, the name "Urashima Sō" has a beautiful sound. The name originates from China, where the groups classified as Urashima Sō have leaves spreading towards the south, as if reaching out to catch the stars in the heavens.


This plant has a beauty that varies with each season, from the appearance of its flowering bracts, to the post-flowering appearance of its leaves, and even the appearance of its fruits formed in exchange for insect lives, all possessing different aesthetic values worthy of appreciation.
