Simpの定義

“Simp”とは新しい単語ではありませんが、最近はやっています。2つの定義を提示します。

The term “simp” isn’t a new word, but has been trending widely since late 2019 and early 2020. The definitions below are apt.

「好きな人のために頑張りすぎる人。」Urban Dictionary (自分の日本語訳）

Someone who does way too much for a person they like

SimpとはS3Xのために女に対して優しすぎて従順であるという男を示す侮辱のスラングである。(自分の日本語訳）

Simp is a slang insult for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a failed hope of winning some entitled sexual attention or activity from them.

Twitchの女性配信者とOnlyFans

女性が自分の性体験談を売るOnlyFansが人気なように、simpはよくある話です。
Twitchの配信は無料ですが、配信者は広告と投げ銭でしかお金がもらえませんから、Twitchの多くの人気な女性ストリーマー（配信者）がOnlyFansで稼ぐことにしています。美人ではなくても、たくさん稼げます。OnlyFansのサブスクリプションを買っている男性がsimpである。
OnlyFansへの課金は単に性的なコンテンツを求めるのではなく、相互作用のようにして行われているのです。

With the advent of OnlyFans, a site where any woman with a camera could start getting a following by posting sexually explicit content of herself, came the recognition of a particular class of men that would make such a system economically viable: simps. Who else would pay for sexual content when you could get it for free?
OnlyFans is a popular source of income for Gamer Girls— women who have a large following on platforms like Twitch. Twitch streams are free, but streamers are able to get money through advertisements and donations from their viewers. Female streamers who are at least average in their looks could get even more money by opening up an OnlyFans. The men who subscribe to an OnlyFans page are simps.
But the question remains: Why pay for sexual content when you can get it for free?
A controversial, but likely answer, is that it’s not only about the sexual content— it’s about the interactivity.

Twitchが最近はやっている理由もクリエイター（配信者）との相互作用にあります。

ゲームは主に男の趣味ですから、Twitchの利用者も主に男性です。当然ながら、女性の配信者はたくさんの男性のフォロワーを引き寄せます。多くの現代の若い男性は不器用で、愛に飢えているものです。しかし、その男性は自分の部屋から好きな女性配信者と少なくとも関係が持てます。よく配信を観て、ライブコメント欄で参加して、投げ銭して、その関係を深くしようとしています。そういう男性視聴者はsimpと呼ばれています。Simpの活動はsimpingと呼ばれています。Simpの恋愛対象は好きな配信者です。

Twitch streamers mostly attract a male audience, because video games are primarily male dominated, and so a female streamer would naturally attract a high number of male followers. Many young men are socially inept and have trouble finding a girlfriend nowadays, and so communicating with their favorite Twitch streamer gives them the female validation that they naturally crave— all from the comfort of their room. By being a regular donator, and being active during streams, a viewer can develop a close “relationship” with the content creator. Such viewers are simps. The act of them supporting the female streamer is simping. Why? Because they are doing it because they have the desire of having the female streamer they are supporting as their girlfriend.

SimpはTwitchのそういう男性視聴者とは限りません。ただそのTwitchの現象でsimpのことは知れ渡っています。Simpは文明の始まりからずっといます。前に述べたようにsimpは『推し』に認知してもらうために、もしくはS3Xのために投げ銭をしたり、従順であったりするのです。

The term “simp” doesn’t only apply in the case of male Twitch audience members. It’s just that the whole dynamic described above is what brought simpery into social awareness— simps have been around since the beginning of human history, it’s just that now they are being called out on their behavior. As stated in the above two definitions, a simp is someone who goes out of their way to do something to get validation from a person they are romantically/sexually interested in.

Simpと同じ日本の人物像

日本には大和撫子という女性像があります。女性に限らずネガティブな意味で使うと、simpと同じです。

In Japan, there’s the female ideal of Yamato Nadeshiko. If used in a negative, gender neutral context, then it can be considered the Japanese equivalent of simp.

女性のSimp

Simpといえば、非モテな草食系男子のイメージが多く持たれていますが、女性のsimpもいます。アニメの人物なんですが、まどかマギカの美樹さやかはsimpの塊です。好きな男の子（恭介）の怪我した手を治るために契約して、魔法少女になり、超常的な敵との戦いに身を委ねることにしました。しかし、恭介は別の子と付き合うことになりました。

Simp has a male connotation, but females can be simps too. A popular example of a female simp is Sayaka from Madoka Magica— she contracted herself into a life of fighting supernatural forces to heal the hand of her crush, Ryousuke, only to have him start dating another girl in class.

日本の観客はさやかのことがいい意味で大和撫子と思っているかもしれませんが、西洋の観客の中にはさやかは恭介と付き合うことをずっと求めっていたからsimpに間違いないと思っている人もいます。

The Japanese audience generally views Sayaka’s sacrifice in a positive light, for she embodies the Yamato Nadeshiko ideal. On the other hand, a good chunk of the Western audience views Sayaka as a simp who made her sacrifice in vain, because of the fact that she wanted to be in a relationship with Ryousuke from the beginning.
