Episode 45 良いスピーチとは?

Introduction:
"Hello and welcome to my English learning podcast. Today's theme is 'What Makes a Good Speech”. We will looking into elements that contribute to an effective and memorable speech.

Small Discussion Question 1:
"Let's start with our first question: What makes for a good speech?

Sample Answer for Question 1:
Personally, I believe that a good speech is characterized by anecdotal experiences, a touch of humour, and politeness. While many speeches tend to be formal, I prefer them to be approachable and not overly formal. Additionally, brevity is key; lengthy speeches can become tiresome and lose the audience’s interest.

Small Discussion Question 2:
Tell me about your experience when you delivered a speech.

Sample Answer for Question 2:
I had an experience delivering a speech at my friend's wedding. I actually had a speech prepared for my friend's wedding, spent a good couple of hours on it. But when it came time to deliver it, I found it difficult to stick to the scripted words so I decided to speak spontaneously, off the cuff, which turned out to be quite successful.

Let’s move on to the vocabulary section!

First thing first we have the phrase 'be characterized by something(~によって特徴付けられる).' This expression means to be defined or marked by a particular quality, trait, or feature. For example, “His leadership style is characterized by transparency and empathy.”

Our next word is 'approachable(とっつきやすい).' If someone is approachable, it means they are friendly, open, and easy to talk to. For instance, “The manager's approachable demeanor makes employees feel comfortable discussing their concerns.”

Moving on, we have the word 'brevity(簡潔さ).' Brevity refers to the quality of being concise and to the point, using few words. For example, “In business communication, brevity is valued to ensure clarity and efficiency.”

Now, let's explore the term 'scripted(原稿に書かれた).' If something is scripted, it means it has been carefully planned or written in advance, often for a performance or presentation. For instance, “The actors memorized their lines for the scripted play.”

Lastly, we have the expression 'off the cuff(話が即席で).' This phrase is used to describe something that is improvised or spoken spontaneously without preparation. For example, “During the interview, she provided insightful answers off the cuff.”

Conclusion:
In the world of English learning, in my opinion, making a speech in English is absolutely a good practice to brush up on your English skills. In which case, conversely, preparing a script could also serves as a good training to create some English sentences. Bye for now!
