（おもんない。）

家では全力で面白いことをしていたルークにとって、友達とのおしゃべりは、見慣れた道をゆっくりと歩くようなことでした。

友達が話している最中に、面白い言葉がどんどん頭に浮かんできます。

でも、何も言えませんでした。変なやつだと思われないような冗談がどれなのか、全く分からなかったからです。

(Boring.)

Having always done hilarious things at home, chatting with ordinary people was like walking a familiar road very slowly.

While chatting, funny jokes came to Luke's mind one after another.

However, he could say none of them, as he had no idea which jokes were appropriate for ordinary people. He didn't want to be labeled a weirdo.

とくに、好きな芸人の話が苦手でした。

（その人と同じようなことをボクもできるよ。）

（ボクはその天才の人にそっくりって妹に言われてるよ。ほめ言葉じゃないけどね。）

心の中でそう思いながら、「そうなんだー。」とあいづちを打っていました。

Luke especially disliked a talk about comedians.

(I can do the same as "this" comedian.)

(My sister says "that" genius is just like me. Of course, it's not a compliment,) he thought but just said, "I see."

会話中に苦しそうな顔をするクラスメートがいました。

「どうしたの？」

心配になって、何度か聞いてみると、最初は「大丈夫。」と言われましたが、ついに本当のことを教えてくれました。

「君が早口過ぎて、頭が痛くなる。」

（えー？そんなに？）

There was a classmate who sometimes looked sick.

"Are you OK?" said Luke several times, worried about him.

At first, the classmate replied, "I'm OK," but finally said,

"My head hurts as you speak too fast."

("That fast? No way!")

普通の授業が始まりました。先生は言いました。

「普通の人は、平和な空気をかもし出す達人です。社会と調和して生きるために、今日から普通の人になる勉強を始めましょう。」

The Ordinary class had began. The teacher said, "An ordinary person is a master of creating a peaceful atmosphere. To harmonize with society, let's start studying how to become an ordinary person."

普通の人が持っている、最も強力な武器が２つあります。それはなんでしょう？」先生は言いました。

（なんのことだかさっぱりわからないや。。。）

少しの沈黙の後、後ろの方から声がしました。

「えがお。」

「その通りです。もう一つは？」

What are the two most powerful weapons of ordinary people?" the teacher said.

Luke had no idea what she meant.

"Smile." A voice said from behind after a short silence.

"Correct. And the other is?"

「ありがとう。」

少ししてから、また後ろから声がしました。

「完璧です！ えがおは平和をもたらし、ありがとうは沢山の親切をもらえる言葉です。右手にえがお、左手にありがとうがあることを、どんな時でも忘れないでください。」

そして先生は、ゲームを始めました。

”Thank you."

The same voice from behind said after another short silence.

"Perfect. Smiles bring peace and "Thank you" invites a lot of kindness. Don't forget you always have a smile in the right hand and thank you in the left hand, not matter what.”

Then she began a game.

（あほくさ。そんなの誰だって知ってるよ。）

そう思いながら眺めていたら、先生がルークの目の前に立ちました。

（普通の学校の先生が、こんな馬鹿馬鹿しいことするなんて。）

そう思ったらおかしくなってきて、笑うのを堪えて震えていたら、先生が言いました。

「その顔です！」

(Silly. Everybody knows that.)

Luke was staring blankly at the teacher, who soon came and stood in front of him.

(How can a teacher at the Ordinary School do this kind of thing?)

Luke was silently shaking, trying to hold back laughter when the teacher said,

"That's it!"

「本当のえがおは自然に出てくるもので、つくった表情ではないと思います。」

そう言った途端、クラスが静かになりました。

（ああ、余計なことを言ってしまった。）

"A genuine smile is a spontaneous facial expression, not a posed one."

As soon as Luke said that, the classroom fell silent. （Oh, I shouldn’t have said that.)

「武器は戦略的に使うものです。自然発生的に使うものではありません。」先生は言いました。

（この鼻と口では、まだ足りないということなんだ。）

それではと、もう一度鏡の前に立ち、とびきりのえがおを描いてみました。

（これでいいのかもしれないな。。

でもやっぱりボクは、作られたえがおなんか欲しくない。

社会で生きていくのって、なんてめんどくさいんだ！）

"We use weapons strategically, not spontaneously," Dorothy said.

（Even this nose and mouth are not enough...）

Then Luke stood in front of the mirror again, and drew a big smile.

("Maybe this will do...

but I don't wanna see a fake smile.

What a pain to live in this society!)

「君、すごい武器を持ってるね。」

後ろからルークに話しかけてきたのは、ドロシー先生の質問に完璧に答えていた声の主、B.B.でした。

「先生、あのあと元気なさそうにしていたよ。君は痛いところを突くのがうまいね。」

”You have a mighty weapon."

Someone talked to Luke from behind. It was B.B. who answered Dorothy’s questions perfectly the day before.

"Dorothy seemed down after that happened. You are very good at going for the jugular."

（それはほめ言葉？　それとも嫌み？）

どこから見ても知性が光るBBにそんなことを言われ、ルークは戸惑っていました。

（ボクは痛いところをつくのが上手いんじゃない、つい本当のことを言ってしまうだけなんだ。そして人から元気を奪い取ったり、怒らせてしまう。

それより、また目立つことをしてしまった。一体どうしたら、ふつうの人になれるんだろう。。）

(Are you praising me or putting me down?)

Talked by a brainy boy who looked intelligent from any angle, Luke was confused.

(It's not like I am good at going for the jugular. I just can't help telling the truth that makes others disheartened or angry.)

(Worst of all, I stood out in a bad way again... How can I become an ordinary person?)

「ふつうの人は聞き上手です。

聞き上手になるためには、まず口を挟まずに、相手の話をしっかり聞くことが大切です。」先生は言いました。

"An ordinary person is a good listener.

To be a good listener, we should avoid interruption and listen carefully to what the speaker says," said the teacher.

（むりだ。。）ルークは思いました。

家では、妹の話が遅い時には指を回して巻きをいれたり、突然「はい終わり。」と言って、話を終わらせていたからです。

(No way!) Luke thought.

At home, when his sister was rambling on, he used to turn his finger to make circles as a sign to let her speak faster or suddenly said, "Let's stop here."

先生は続けます。

「普通の人たちは、相槌が得意です。相手の話に興味があることをアピールしましょう。」

（ふつうの話には興味が無いんだ。。

でも、なにがなんでも普通っぽくして友達になっておかないといけないんだ。

好きな子とグループをつくるように言われる恐怖の日がきっと来るから。）

"Ordinary people are an expert at back-channeling. Let's show interest in the speaker!"

（I am not interested in ordinary talks but I must behave as an ordinary person and keep friends no matter what, as the day will surely come when the teacher will ask us to make a group as we like!"）

決まったあいづちを使うと、話を聞いているフリが出来るようになりました。

そして、ふつうに見えるように、余計なことを言わなくなりました。

Luke became able to pretend to be listening to the speaker using set phrases of back-channeling.

To look ordinary, he also tried not to speak too much.

しばらくの間、こうして人とやりとりを続けていたルークでしたが、ある日、ついに限界が来ました。

「寝るのも飽きる。。。
　そうだ、自分と話そう！」

それからは、頭の中でボケの自分とツッコミの自分を登場させて、『普通の会話』の続きを自分でするようになりました。

Luke kept on communicating with others that way for a while but finally thought he couldn't stand it anymore.

"I'm tired of sleeping...
I know! I can talk by myself!"

Since then, he had his funny self and straight one appear in his head and continued "the ordinary talk" by himself as he liked.

大好きだったメアリー先生がいなくなったので、ルークは勉強を頑張るのをやめました。

ただ、一つ、好きな科目ができました。

それは、外国語でした。

As Mary, Luke's favorite teacher was not there, Luke stopped studying hard. But he had come to like one subject.

It was Foreign Language.

「ここは、自由と平等でいっぱいの素晴らしい国です。いろんな人が住んでいて、プールつきの大きな家に住めて、美味しいものが沢山食べられます。」

「自由と平等！

うわぁーすごーい！

ということは、いじめも無いし、悩みもないし、みんなが美味しいもの食べて楽しく暮らしているに違いない！ボクもこんな国に住みたい！」

"This wow country is full of freedom and equality. Various kinds of people live in a large house with a swimming pool. There are lots of delicious food, too."

"Wooooow! Freedom and equality! That means everybody can live happily with no fighting, bullying, or worries, and can eat delicious food every day. I wanna live there too!"

外国語のクラスには、留学から帰ったばかりの子がいました。

（うわぁーー、発音がすごいなー！

どんな国だったのか、色々聞いてみたいな。）

In the foreign language class, there was a boy who just returned from the wow country.

(Wooooow, his pronunciation is excellent! I wanna hear all his stories!)

ある日のことです。その子が隣の席に座りました。「何か話したいな。」ルークはソワソワしていました。

少し経ってから、とつぜん隣から声が聞こえてきました。「We◇★」

独り言のような、でもハッキリとした声でした。

（まさか。。）

いやな予感がしました。

One day, that boy sat next to Luke.
（Wanna talk with him...) Luke was fidgeting.

After a little while, Luke suddenly heard a voice next to him. "We◇★"

The boy may have been talking to himself, but it was very clear.

(No way..) Luke had a bad feeling.

家に帰り、おそるおそる辞書を開くと、予想した通りの言葉が書いてありました。

「変」

（まだ何も話していないのに、あいつは天才か？

目も鼻も口もあるし、制服を着て普通っぽく振る舞っているのに。

自由と平等でいっぱいの国でいろんな人を見てきたはずなのに、ボクにそんな意地悪なことを言うなんて、一体全体どういうこと？！）

Getting home, Luke nervously looked up the word in the dictionary and found the translation he expected.

"weird"

(Is he a genius? We have not even talked! I have eyes, a nose, and a mouth, wearing a school uniform, and behaving like an ordinary boy!

How can a person who has seen various kinds of people in a country full of freedom and equality be so mean? What the actual heck is going on?! ）　

「第一印象は、人と接する上でとても大切です。

なによりも、正しい姿勢を保つことが重要です。

姿勢の良い人は、明るく、キチンとした印象を与えます。」

（ああ、なるほど！）

"Creating a good first impression is very important in communication with others, and maintaining good posture is what matters most. It makes you look bright and decent."

(Oh, I see!)

ルークは授業中の姿勢を思い出していました。

先生がいる時は少しだけ、いない時はのびのびと、常に体のどこかをリラックスさせていました。

最も好きだったのは、考えるふりをしながら寝ることでした。

Luke recalled his poor posture during class.

He always tried to make himself as comfortable as he could. Just a little bit when his teacher was in the class, and 100% when he was away.

Above all, Luke liked to sleep while pretending to think.

家に帰る途中で、「きみは酔ってるように歩くね。」とクラスメートに声をかけられました。

森の中では、お昼寝をするのが好きでした。

"You walk like a drunken man," said Luke's classmate on the way back home.

And in the woods, he loved to take a nap.

いつも、頭の中で歌を歌っていました。

誰もいないところでは大きな声で歌い、誰かが近いてきたら声を小さくして、バレないように歌いました。

Luke was singing all day long in his head.

Where there were no people, he sang out loud, and as someone came near him, he lowered his voice not to get caught.
