　学校の英語の先生にとって、英検指導も大切な仕事の１つです。先日、日本英語検定協会（以下、英検協会）が、準2級と2級の間の新たな級について、概要や問題例を公表しました。

【新設級の概要】
　身近な話題であれば、社会生活に必要な英語を理解し、また使用することができる。
（参考）
2級：社会生活に必要な英語を理解し、また使用することができる。
準2級：日常生活に必要な英語を理解し、また使用することができる。

【測定概念】
＜２級＞
　社会的な話題について、聞いたり読んだりした複雑な内容の詳細を理解したり、聞いたり読んだりした情報や自分の考えを多様な語句を目的に応じて用いながら、まとまりのある発話や文章を通して自分の力で詳しく伝える能力。
　CEFR B1　英語コミュニケーション　*CALP（抽象的）
＜新設級＞
　身近な社会的な話題について、聞いたり読んだりした内容の詳細を理解したり、聞いたり読んだりした情報や自身の考えを多様な語句を用いた発話や文章を通して詳しく伝える能力。
　CEFR A2＋　英語コミュニケーションⅡ　*CALPへの橋渡し
＜準2級＞
　日常的な話題について、聞いたり読んだりした内容の概要を捉えたり、簡単な情報や考えであれば基本的な語句を用いた発話や文章を通して伝える能力。

　う～ん、これだけではいまいちわからないので、設問例を見てみましょう。

【設問の例】

＜新設級＞
What caused the number of tortoises to become fewer after humans arrived?
1. Tortoises were taken away to be studied by scientist.
2. Many tortoises were sold for their expensive shells.

＜準2級＞
Why did the number of tortoises become smaller?
1. Tortoises were taken away for study.
2. Humans killed tortoises to sell their shells.
3. Many tortoises became sick and died.
4. People enjoyed eating tortoise eggs.

【長文問題の例】
文構造や語彙について難易度を下げることにより認知的負荷を低減した設問
＜2級＞
The arrival of humans on the Galapagos Islands in the late 18th century was a disaster for the tortoises. When sailors who had spent months at sea reached the islands, they wanted fresh meat, and the giant tortoises were easy to catch. Scientists also took away many of these unusual animals for research and to display in zoos. The biggest problem, though, was the rats that came on the ships with the sailors. Although rats were not a threat to adult tortoises, they ate the tortoises’ eggs and babies.
＜新設級＞
Humans came to the Galapagos Island in the late 1700s, and this was bad for the tortoises. Sailors who had been at sea for a long time wanted fresh meat, and the big tortoises were easy to catch. Scientists also took many to study and show in zoos. The biggest problem was the rats from the sailors’ ships. Rats did not harm adult tortoises, but they ate the eggs and baby tortoises. This was a big threat to the tortoises’ survival.

　まさに、２級と準２級の間ですね。ということは、指導もそれらの級の指導と同様にできそうです。今まで２級合格に苦戦していた生徒がまずは新設級に受かる可能性が高まりますね。そうすると、モチベーションを高めたまま、２級対策に進めることが期待できます。もちろん、新たな教材の購入や試験実施の複雑化など、新設級の導入はメリットばかりではありません。ただ新設級は2025年度から開始を目指して開発を進めているのは事実です。皆さんはこれからどのように指導をされますか？何かいいプランがありましたら、コメントくださいね！
