About TSUCHIDA Yasuhiko

Tsuchida Yasuhiko is a Murano glass craftsman.
Murano glass is a traditional craft that has been made for 1000 years on the Murano island in Venice, Italy.

Previously he was a chef.
He was interested in food and art, and moved to Paris upon graduating from cooking school.
After that he moved to Venice and started making Murano glass.

Why he was a chef?
He has loved art since he was a child and wanted to be an artist.
He imagined that traveling the world, spreading knowledge, and honing  sensibility were important things to become an artist.
But It is difficult to earn money until recognized as an artist.
So he focused on cooking.
A chef is useful anywhere in the world. And a chef can eat even if he is unpaid!
In this way, Tsuchida selected to the both way, "food" and "art."

"Bamboo Collection"
He worked hard on Murano island and released the glass sculpture series,  "Bamboo Collection".
This series was inspired by Japanese bamboo.
"Bamboo Collection" has been acclaimed all over the world.
And now, He is the most famous Japanese artist who has a workshop on the Murano island.

They has beautiful curved lines and are brown in color.
The shape is not like real bamboo.
Because he is not imitating bamboo, but trying to extract the concept of bamboo.
Bamboo that grows naturally is green, but when it dries well, it turns to brown like amber.
Dried bamboo is often used in traditional Japanese crafts.
The fact that he selected brown not green shows that he imagined bamboo in traditional Japanese crafts.
