Question

In your speech you have mentioned the great uniting power of EURO, and our question is how do you perceive the fact that the country currencies such as CHECKGROUND, COLITIZOGY, VOTALIANRERO, even dollar have the strongest exchange rate ever, so does it mean EURO is losing its international trust?

Answer

Thank you so much.
But I would take quite to the contrary.
Because when I look, we just published actually the role of EURO as an international currency.
And we are making slight progress.
The EURO has around 19% of Central Bank’s Reserves around the world.
The DOLLAR is the overall big international currency of reference.
It’s been like that you know ever since the 2nd world war and it managed to move away the Sterling Pounds.

But from this very stable 19% of reserves, we’ve now hedged up a little bit. Not by long shot, but it’s directionally up.
So I wouldn’t say that it is declining or that it is losing trust.
I think that to the contrary it is stabilizing and hopefully continuing to increase its position as an international currency.

You know, we do not target an exchange rate relative to other currencies. Neither to the dollar nor to the basket of currencies that includes 5 key currencies in the world.
But we are very attentive, because it matters for inflation.
And we have over the course of the last 3 years.
First of all depreciated relative to the dollar then the dollar depreciated in tern, it is evident flows to that which generally reflects either to the state of economy, the geo-political circumstances, which have an impact because the sort of safe heaven status that the dollar enjoys entails currency appreciation in general.

But I am confident that we are and we have to continue being on the right track.
There are other currencies that are moving as well.
None of those that you have mentioned.
But I would say that the YEN is always the third but way behind us, the RENMINBI is something to watch because China is trying to push its currency as an international one since it has been included in the basket of Special Drawing Rights from the International Monetary Fund respective.

Notes
