先週末の雨にも負けず、昨日、今日頃が満開見ごろ。
毎年、地元の夙川に咲くサクラを見学する。

It was in full bloom yesterday and today, despite the rain last weekend. Every year, l visit the cherry blossoms that bloom in the Shukugawa.

ここ数年、気にかかることがある。サクラの老木化が目立つ。
夙川の河川敷のサクラはほとんどがソメイヨシノで、
この種類は樹齢が40、50年といわれるなか、老木化は致し方ない。

I have been worried about it in the last few years.
The aging of cherry trees is conspicuous. Most of the cherry blossoms on the riverbed of Shukugawa are Yoshino cherry trees.
This type is said to be 40 or 50 years old, but it is unavoidable to age it.

夙川河川敷には、1949年に1000本のサクラが植栽され、
関西屈指の名所になっている。
現在は約1700本で両岸2.8kmに及ぶサクラ並木が続いている。
夙川のサクラの大半が樹齢70年以上になる。
老木化した樹が目立ってもやむを得ないかも。

In 1949, 1000 cherry trees were planted on the Shukugawa riverbed. It is one of the most famous places in Kansai. Currently, there are about 1,700 cherry trees lined up on both banks for 2.8 km. Most of the cherry blossoms in Shukugawa are over 70 years old. It may be unavoidable if the old trees stand out.

老木に見られる樹木の形状には特徴がある。幹のほとんどが捻れている。
永い間のいろいろな要因で変化していくのであろう。
人間を含む命あるもの全て同じように思える。
気になるので捻れる要因を調べてみた。
樹木は立地環境の変化に対応し、その都度姿・形を変えようとする。
樹木が、そのときどきに与えられた状況に応じ樹形を最適化しようとするものらしい。
さらに立地環境の変化ばかりでなく、
強風や冠雪による枝折れや幹折れ、幹の腐朽、病害虫被害、傷害、
亀裂、剪定、移植など様々な要因で形状が変化するようだ。

The shape of the trees found in old trees is characteristic.
Most of the trunk is twisted. It will change due to various factors over a long period of time. Everything that is alive, including humans, seems to be the same.
I am curious, so I investigated the factors that cause it to twist. Trees respond to changes in the location environment and try to change their appearance and shape each time.
It seems that the tree tries to optimize the tree shape according to the situation given at that time. Furthermore, not only the change in the location environment, but also Branch breaks and trunk breaks due to strong winds and snow cover, trunk decay, pest damage, injuries, the shape seems to change due to various factors such as cracking, pruning, and transplantation.

しかしながら、見てのとおり今年も、
朽ち果てた幹の根元から、また枝の先から新枝が伸び花を咲かせいる。
最後の役割は命のバトンタッチである。
昨年よりは新たな命が蘇生し芽生えているように思える。
それが、また来年花を咲かせてくれるはずである。

However, as you can see, this year as well New branches grow from the roots of the decayed trunk and from the tips of the branches and bloom.
The final role is the baton touch of life. It seems that new life has been revived and sprouted from last year.
It should bloom again next year.
