兵庫県三木市と言えば、”播州の打刃物(主に大工道具類)の金物”の町として知られている。大工道具の中でも、とくに三木の五大金物として、鉋(かんな)、鑿(のみ)、鋸(のこぎり)、鏝(こて)、小刀(こがたな)は国の伝統工芸品に指定されている。

全国でも古式鍛錬打刃物をつくる鍛冶職人さんは極めて少ないといわれている。なかでも「伝統工芸士」と言われ方は貴重な存在である。
三木市の道の駅の二階に常設展示の中の鉋コーナーには、伝統工芸士の今井重信さんの鍛錬された極めつけの逸品があった。寸八(24.2㎝)の鉋が、21万円代の値がついていた。

子供のときに家屋新築の現場で大工仕事に興味があったのかよく眺めていた記憶がある。大工さんの鉋削りや鑿使い、墨壷で線を引き鋸でいとも簡単に切っている姿がカッコいいと思ったのを記憶している。
いまの時代の大工さんの仕事現場は知らないが、たぶん鉋削りをして姿はないのではと思う。柱用の角材は、事前に決まった寸法に削られた角材を持ち込みはめ込むだけのようである。職人仕事では、鉋や鑿は無用の長物になっているのではないだろうか。

いまの職人仕事はスピーディに、そして合理的に進めていくのが求められている。致し方ないが、職人の技や感などの技能は活かされないのが現実のような気がする。
木材の適材適所を知り尽くし、1ミリ、1秒、1gを活かす技や道具は、機械やコンピュータにも負けないはずである。そんな匠の技が必要とされる時代がまた来ると道具を見ながら思った。
これからの時代に新たな価値を創造するための必要な道具として使われる存在になってほしいものである。

Today's craftsmanship is required to proceed speedily and rationally. lt can't be helped but I feel that the reality is that the skills and feelings of craftsmen are not utilized.
The techniques and tools that know the right place for wood and make the best use of 1 mm, 1 second, and 1 g should be comparable to machines and computers. Looking at the tools, I thought that the time would come when such craftsmanship would be required again.
I hope that it will be used as a necessary tool for creating new value in the coming era.
